Warning: If you stay here long enough you will gain weight! Grazing here strongly suggests that you are either omnivorous, or a glutton. And you might like cheese-doodles.
BTW: I'm presently searching for another person who likes cheese-doodles.

BIG HEAP OF TOBACCO

A friend mentioned that he was interested in my tobacco posts, and asked if there was any easy way to get at all of them. The reason for his query was probably because of all the other stuff on my blog. Wombats. Zebras. Cantonese teenagers. Existential angst.

Just too much stuff. It gets in the way.

I can understand the complaint, and really do want to cater to the tobacco heads. Who have no interest in anything else.
So I have created a new clickable link on the side-bar ('TOBACCO LIST'), which will always take you directly to this very post.

Which is where you will find links to all tobacco related posts, sporadically updated.

If you came here for news of the cigar-smokers who congregate at a certain spot in downtown San Francisco most weekday afternoons, please follow this link: THE WALL.
They can also be found here: CIGARS. There is a categorical overlap.
They live in their own world, though sometimes it touches ours.
Sort of a Venn-diagram of madness.
Very strange.

The articles listed here relate largely to pipes and pipe smoking.

[Most recent update: Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Everything till mid April 2016.]

Two unsmoked pipes perfect for a young lady. Random forward-looking thoughts about meeting precisely such a person -- in which 'young lady' stands for a mature adult, please understand, though one who is witty as well as springlike -- and brief mention of Leslie Cheung.

One might suspect that I am a pervert, but that would be wrong.

DELICIOUS IRONY
Thursday, April 04, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/04/delicious-irony.html
Smoking three of my own blends. A medium Latakia mixture, a pleasant Virginia compound, and something profoundly old-school. Memories are associated with certain tobacco smells.

GUARANTEED WOMAN REPELLANT
Tuesday, April 16, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/04/guaranteed-woman-repellant.html
Description of a fine freak by Cornell & Diehl. Latakia, unflavoured black cavendish, and Perique. In that order. If you're married, your wife (or your husband) will quite likely hate this. If you aren't married, this may deepsix your chances of ever reaching that state. Sam's blend. It is good.

TOBACCO IS BENEFICIAL

http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/04/tobacco-is-beneficial.html
Asserting that pot is a noxious weed, and all who partake thereof are irredeemably vile. As well as the considered opinion that California Assemblyman Marc Levine (from San Raphael) is a noodge.
If I had pin-striped boxers, I would wear them.

ON THE VIABILITY OF PIPE TOBACCO ENTERPRISES
Sunday, April 21, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/04/on-viability-of-pipe-tobacco-enterprises.html
The tobacco industry as it relates to pipe smokers, what it once was and thoughts about the future, as well as mention of the last tobacconist in
San Francisco, which is actually elsewhere: Telfords, in Mill valley.
If you live near Van Ness Avenue, take the 70 or 80 to Marin. If you work in the Financial District, the 18 will get you there during evening rush hour.
Get off at Seminary Drive and walk past the fast-food joint and the 7-11.
You can smoke there, and there is every reason that you should.
Mr. Marc Levine (a cretin from San Raphael, currently in the California State assembly by mistake) has probably never set foot in the place.

What all women dream of. Steak, cigars, and fine pipe tobacco. Recommendations for your smoke, including cigars, Greg L. Pease's mixtures, and a suitable venue if you're hiding out from the curious noses that might throw a spanner into your works. Plus salad with blue cheese dressing and a spot of sherry.

Friday, May 3, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/05/meeting-of-middle-aged-persons-involved_3.html
Golden Gate Pipe Club meeting, a selection of blends one of which might end up being carrying the club name and stamp of approval if we can ever get our act together bunch of damned anarchists, plus overthrowing the monarchy, and a zesty recipe for Jalapeño Salad, which is a lovely hors d'oeuvre, especially late at night. Goes with Jameson's whiskey.

THE GLOW OF DISCOVERY
Sunday, June 2, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-glow-of-discovery.html
Stepping out with Borkum Riff. No, I am not a desperate degenerate, what made you think that? Some of the over the counter (OTC) blends are actually decent and reliable products, and they keep lots of people on desert islands happy while waiting for the sharks.

Spam, baked beans from a can, plus spongy fried bread. British family life. A howling monkey.
Mildly sweet steam-pressed Virginias with a touch of Kentucky, and an unidentifiable additive.

Saturday, July 27, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/07/what-do-other-people-do-on-friday-and.html
The temperance and restraint of pipe-smokers, juxtaposed with the riotous misbehaviour of everybody else. In it's own way a recommendation for being a seriously upstanding and admirable person.
I'm a pipe-smoker, I would never lie to you.
Trust me.

That's just the way it is.

PARENTAL INFLUENCE
Wednesday, September 18, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/09/parental-influence.html
How I started smoking a pipe at age fourteen while living in Valkenswaard, and my parents reactions. Plus authors who were formative influences, and my father's trip to England, during which he left his pipes unguarded in an unlocked desk drawer.
Comoy Blue Ribands, John's Pipe Shop house brands, Petersons.
Coffee and extra tins of something dark and stinky.
Heaven. Sheer teenage heaven.

RATIONAL CHOICES
Friday, November 1, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/11/rational-choices.html
You too could smell like a grumpy badger. Directions to a pipe store, and suggestions regarding the cost of starting to smoke a pipe. Which, truth be told, I really wish more young ladies would do. Pipes indicate a quirky and intelligent mind, whereas cigarettes rather suggest female depravity. Not that I entirely disapprove of that, but as it is never directed at ME, we really don't need anymore of it in the world.

209.
THREE DAY OLD PUMPKIN PIE
Sunday, November 3, 2013

Sunday, November 10, 2013
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2013/11/a-girl-in-blackface-dane-and-one.html
Meeting of the pipe club. Stokkebye's newest fourth generation blend, two offerings by Greg Pease, and a distressing paucity of matches. Dudes, we need matches, we're desperate. Oh, and Hello Kitty too.
Because pipe smoking is very British, and so is that pussy.

DRUCQUER'S BLEND 805 AND CULTIVATING A FINE WHITE ASH
Tuesday, February 4, 2014
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2014/02/drucquers-blend-805-and-cultivating.html
A woman of Chinese ancestry who liked a particular blend of tobacco from a store at which we both once worked. I miss both her and the tobacco. Fifty percent Latakia, twenty five percent Turkish, and three different Virginias which are no longer available. By the way, she owned a Sasieni sandblast apple that made other pipe afficionados drool.

Sunday, March 2, 2014
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2014/03/balkan-sobranie-more-than-you-ever.html
A posting of dubious benefit. Famous tobaccos, modern blends. A fourteen year-old boy with good pipe-smoking habits, and a young lady who is far too young for me to even consider. Wicked perfume: Cartier, Aoud, Safari.

TOBACCO FOR BOYS AND GIRLS
Saturday, April 5, 2014
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2014/04/tobacco-for-boys-and-girls.html
You really want your daughter to smoke a pipe. If you smell a whisp of Latakia or Perique escaping from underneath her locked bedroom door, she's probably studying, and in any case is not engaged in risky behaviour with the boy next door. She's got her head screwed on right, and instead of dropping out of junior college to raise a brat, she'll go on to graduate school.
That's what you want, isn't it?

224.
HELLO KITTY BACKPACK
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2014/04/hello-kitty-backpack.html

IT SMELLS LIKE BADGER THERE
Monday, July 14, 2014
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2014/07/it-smells-like-badger-there.html
Yet another post gently advocating that young persons should take up pipe smoking, especially in these modern times, when their depraved peers are killing braincells with drugs and alcohol. Far better that they should smell of Latakia or Perique, than reek of medicinal grade marijuana.
For one thing, it's much better for the memory.
Also a superior life-style choice.
Morally sound, too.

VALKENSWAARD IN PREVIOUS TIMES

First forays into pipe smoking, but much more about a town in Brabant that made cigars and was a formative memory after I returned to the States. The tobacconist where I bought numerous pouches of Baai Tabak, or tins of Balkan Sobranie and Dunhill mixtures, is still there, and has an ever bigger selection of Dutch cigars, as well as an exceptional range of Cubanos.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS
Wednesday, September 30, 2015
http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2015/09/what-you-need-to-know-about.html
It strikes me that if a man has to hide his hobby, or pursue it beyond his wife's ken, there's something almighty f*cked up about their marriage.
Especially if it isn't a perversion or membership in the Klan or the Elks.
But merely an aesthetic and mood-related fondness for briar.
As well as a liking for old-fashioned tobacco.

That's why I propose involving an entirely new generation of smokers. Today's highschool kids need an alternative to illegal drugs and their mothers' medicine cabinets. A number of special brands of cigarettes could very well be developed/designed with today's fresh teen-smoker in mind.

Nice thick Virginia straights for the young ladies ("girl, smoke 'Honey-picked'™ for that sweet clean taste!"), versus rugged caporals for the 'with-it' boy ("Mad Jack™ - it's for the man who knows his own mind").

I am writing up a business plan.
