BAD DUTCH UNCLE

Sometimes little boys demand attention. Especially when their inferior, a girl-child (the older sister), seems to be getting any. Because paying attention to girls upsets the natural order, and is manifestly wrong!

Why, he will ask, are you paying HER all that mind?!?

Why, because she's a sensitive kind young lady!

And that is entirely as it should be.


"I am a sensitive kind young lady!"


His indignance was palpable. The air crackled with tension after his angry squawk. Possibly because everyone was trying not to giggle, or wondering whether they should have a serious talk with him.
Before years of therapy were needed.

I probably did not help matters (at least I hope not) because in passing by the little family group I leaned over and said avuncularly "there there, of COURSE you are".

It felt like the right thing to do. I am the avunculus you do not want to have.

You can count on me for words of encouragement.

I am very supportive.


Of all the wrong things, especially your offsprings' peculiarities, but, nevertheless, supportive. Of the twisted little beasts.
All the wrong reasons, too.
