Pursuant yesterday's post, which was entitled 'naughty round heads', a friend in Israel sent me the following:

Frankly, I'm baffled. I am not pornography, honest! I do not even know how to embed pictures!
Was it the mention of round heads? I assure you no heads were shown, round, naughty, or otherwise.
"The internet exists for six things: kitten pictures, recipes, salacious imagery, slamming Israel, talking about space aliens, and bad grammar."
Nor were any acts of a pornographic nature even described. I expressly clarified that pornography was NOT the subject of that post, and avoided mentioning in ANY way the kissy lipped short, round-headed brunettes with delicate hands, dark sparkling eyes, and smooth clear skin, that are the objects of so much teenage male fantasy.
ME, SMUT?!?
Yes, I did mention camels. To be precise, underage camels, with "sleek well-muscled hindquarters", naughty naughty racing camels, with "nicely veined haunches" and deep deep eyes. But that was, errrrrrrrm, a metaphor. It was meant symbolically. As a literary device.
What people might do to those camels was in no way even suggested.
And for the record, there was NO mention AT ALL of mares, heifers, reflex ovulators, does, bitches, broodhens, dolphins of either gender........
No whips, chains, restraint devices, cuffs, leather straps, giant rubber objects, balloons, flexible plastic pants, clysters, tarpaulins, buckets of vanilla pudding, itch powder, olive oil.......
WHIPPING CREAM!
It was probably one of my cleanest posts yet, and I'm offended that some illiterate firewall overseas decided, entirely on its electronic own, to label my casual literary efforts as 'pornography'!
Such a fierce and unwarranted critique!

This blog is about many things - matters edible, aesthetic, linguistic, and political - but it is not about SEX.
Well, not often.
Feel free to read all the way back to the beginning to see if you can spot more than half a dozen mentions of congress or plastic wrap.
Please consider that a challenge.
On the other hand, if you want to print me out, rub me all over your shapely body, and send me the video of your lovely self doing that, I shall be more than happy to review it for artistic and titillatory qualities.

NAUGHTY ROUND HEADS!
Today I am manfully resisting the temptation to write about pornography, much as I wish to explore the subject. The reason being that there is far too much pornography on Jameel's blog, in the comments section.
It is a fascinating discussion, with much profound expertise being flung back and forth.
Research, intensive research, has been done.
Pornography, though utterly intriguing, is not the subject here.
Therefore I shall not mention short, round-headed brunettes, nor delicate hands, and dark sparkling eyes. Smooth clear skin, and kissy lips.
Naked or not.
Nor even, despite much demand, underage camels, with sleek well-muscled hindquarters - the object of desire, apparently, for many in strange parts of the world.
For the love of Allah, will no one think of the underage camels??!!????!!??

Of course, now that I have mentioned smut in some detail, anything else I write about today will likely fade into insignificance. I cannot write about pipe-tobacco, because in comparison to lovely videos of sweet young things performing staggering acts with gay abandon, that subject will seem shallow - many of my readers are not that interested in pipe-tobacco even at the best of times.
By the same token I cannot write about fabulous pork dishes - porn and pork don't go together, and you probably cruised in here to get away from treif anyhow.
How about Chinese Poetry?
Why, that brings up pork and porn again! Or at least it does in some people's minds.
Mine, for instance.
CHANGE OF SCENE
Stockton Street, Chinatown, San Francisco. A lovely sunny afternoon (yesterday).
Delicate maidens, short and round-headed, wearing airy summer dresses, or light blouses.
A gentle zephyr ruffles their fine dark hair, creating trailing clouds of gossamer mahogany behind each well-sculpted head.
At one o'clock I ducked into a bakery for a dowsabao and a kaleikok, tongmai yat pui ka-fey. While lunching I noticed that there were misspellings in both languages on the menu - some unauthorized short forms of Chinese characters, plus "moose". Moose?
Moose?!? Moose?!!?!!?
The kaleikok was mediocre, the dowsabao was too big. I did not try the moose.
Upon leaving, I had difficulty not thinking of the petite and shorter than me female forms so omni-present on Stockton Street, with the tapered little fingers, small feet, and sparkling eyes.
They surrounded me, but I controlled my bestial urges.
I did not even once think of naughty naughty racing camels, with nicely veined haunches and deep deep eyes!

Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) describes itself as a diverse and democratic community of activists inspired by Jewish tradition to work together for peace, social justice, and human rights, supporting the aspirations of Israelis and Palestinians for security and self-determination. They seek "an end to the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem" and oppose Israel Defense Forces operations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

ISRAEL HATERS
In practice, Jewish Voice for Peace is a pro-Palestinian group nominally composed of Jews. They are co-enablers and fellow-travelers of the more rabid anti-Israel activists and organizations, apologists for the excesses of both the pro-Palestinians as well as Hamas.
Their members usually stand with SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine), Women in Black, Codepink, and International A.N.S.W.E.R. at anti-Israel rallies here in the Bay Area.
Given their (JVP's) presence at protests where the other pro-Palestinians chanted "ba ruh ba dam nafdeek ya Falastin" ('with our souls and our blood we will redeem you oh Palestine' - reflecting the desire to stake their lives, and implicitly swearing to use violence), "itbach al Yahud" ('slaughter the Jews'), "kahybar khabar ya yahud, jaish-e Muhammad saya'ud" ('Khaybar Khabar, oh Jews, the gang of Muhammad will return!'), "Falastin bladna wa'l Yahud kalabna" ('Palestine is OUR land and the Jews are our dogs'), "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" (say, ain't there a country called Israel in between?), "down down Israel" (um, I guess that's pretty clear, huh?), and where speaker after speaker advocated the destruction of Israel, the expulsion of Jews from the land (and, once even, from Oakland), spoke about sending the Israelis back to Russia, and so on and so forth, those 'Jews' in JVP have absolutely NO plausible deniability.
They have stood side by side with people screaming for murder, ethnocide, and the violent overthrow of both the Israeli government and the US government.
Solidarity be damned, they need to be judged on their causes and their comrades.

Many of their members also overlap into other organizations, such as the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, the Arab Resource Organizing Committee, Students for Justice in Palestine (rabidly anti-Israel AND venomous, despite the Jews who are members), the ISM, Meca, and others. Plus of course QUIT and BAWIB - also ennablers and apologists.
Not only do many of these organizations and individuals oppose the policies of the Israeli government, they oppose the very existence of Israel. The only Israel they will even consider is a rump-state, without Jerusalem, without Galilea, without the Negev, and without the Golan. Many even argue that Tel Aviv needs to be returned.
In their eyes, terrorism is justified as the natural response of the repressed natives, both righteous and perfect, and quibbling about Jewish civilian deaths is merely a form of racism and Nazism.
Several of them advocate a socialist paradise in lieu of two states, the complete return of anyone who ever called himself a Palestinian Arab, and the repatriation of American and Russian Jews. Some even argue that only Middle-Eastern Jews should be allowed to remain, and that the official language be Arabic only.
JVP'ers will happily stand with supporters of murder and terrorism, basking in the glow of solidarity and self-righteousness.
Like many organizations composed of hypocrites and weasels, their name does not betray their loathsomeness - that only comes with exposure to their methods and their street-side rhetoric.

ANTI-ISRAEL RESOLUTION: WRITE TO THE SAN FRANCISCO BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
Yesterday an anti-Israel resolution was introduced by SF supervisors John Avalos, David Campos, Chris Daly and Sophie Maxwell. It is scheduled for a vote on Tuesday June 15th.

DUTCH ELECTION RESULTS
Election results in the Netherlands show the VVD ('Vereniging voor Vrijheid en Democratie' - free market liberals) and the Party van de Arbeid (Labour) as receiving the most votes, both ending up with 31 seats each in parliament.
Geert Wilders ('Partij Voor de Vrijheid' - freedom party) advances to 23 seats, passing the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA - centrists) to become the third largest group.
The final count is not yet complete, and may not be known till tomorrow.

What is really good news, however, is that the far left (SP - Socialistische Partij) are in serious trouble.

As it stands the next government might be an odd alliance of Liberals (VVD), Centrists (CDA), and "people with strong opinions" (PVV).
In order to increase stability, D66 should probably be included - the Democrats of 1966 have for a long time been a voice of sanity and intelligence in Dutch politics (which explains why they aren't a very large party).

ENVIRONMENTALISTS AGAINST ISRAEL
Many of my friends have been overjoyed that the Teabaggers are ripping apart the Republican party - and not because they are all opposed to the Republicans. Their reasoning is that if the loonies all leave to start their own movement, common sense may yet return to the GOP. And at least it will be easier to figure out how many conservatives are stark raving.
That, actually, is a process that has also been happening on the left.
It's called the Green Party.
Which, as it turns out, is a magnet for the anti-Israel side.
Including some people who are certifiably insane, and many who are just old-fashioned leftwing anti-Semites.
[Here in San Francisco, supervisor Ross Mirkarimi (district 5) represented the Green Party in city government - he was a co-founder of the California Green Party (1990). He has since rejoined the Democratic Party (March 2010).
Personally I am rather glad that Mirkarimi has left the Greens - even though I do not agree with many of his ideas, he has been very good for San Francisco, and is one of the more interesting (by reason of intelligence) political voices in Baghdad-by-the-Bay.]
According to the Green Party website:
"The San Francisco Green Party is one of the largest and strongest local Green groups in the US with almost 9,000 registered Greens, about 2% of the total number of registered voters. We have a Green on the Board of Supervisors and CA Coastal Commission, Ross Mirkirimi, and a Green on the Golden Gate Bridge Commission, Dave Snyder."
On June 1, the San Francisco Green Party resolved to boycott Israel.

Lest you now think that this is typical of San Francisco, I hasten to point out that that is just not so.
It is typical of several municipalities in the great state of California.

NATIONAL
The Green Party is not just a California phenomenon - there are Israel-hating greens all over the country.
Their recent presidential candidate, Cynthia McKinney, hails from Georgia. A more active Israel hater in national politics might be hard to find.

Like a broken Fascist record, the Green Party in many locales keeps echoing the resolution they passed nationally urging divestment from Israel in 2005.
As the Teabaggers represent the Moose-humping fringe on the right, the Green Party embodies the Jew-hating moonbeams on the left.
Remarkably, the spiteful bigot who introduced an anti-Israel resolution at a San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting recently was, as far as I can tell, not a current or past member of the Green Party.
He may be a firm supporter of the ISM, though. Judging by a previous engagement.
That, actually, is a process that has also been happening on the left.
It's called the Green Party.
Which, as it turns out, is a magnet for the anti-Israel side.
Including some people who are certifiably insane, and many who are just old-fashioned leftwing anti-Semites.
[Here in San Francisco, supervisor Ross Mirkarimi (district 5) represented the Green Party in city government - he was a co-founder of the California Green Party (1990). He has since rejoined the Democratic Party (March 2010).
Personally I am rather glad that Mirkarimi has left the Greens - even though I do not agree with many of his ideas, he has been very good for San Francisco, and is one of the more interesting (by reason of intelligence) political voices in Baghdad-by-the-Bay.]

RABBIT FIERCE
The other day when I boarded the bus, a Chinese gentleman and his little daughter boarded also. I had noticed them among the multitude at the bus stop previously – they must live on the same block – but what especially caught my eye this time was the stuffed animal the child was carrying. She had a bunny. A bright pink bunny, which she held dangling by a leg.
Older women, such as teenagers and college age young ladies, often have backpacks, or handbags. And cellphones, ipods, compacts. This and that.
The little girl obviously understood the need for stylish and practical encumbrances, but limited herself to what was truly essential: a bunny rabbit.
She carried her accessory unselfconsciously; casual, yet businesslike.
She and her father sat down opposite an elderly white woman, who complemented her on her pretty dress. The little girl did not know what to make of this and drew closer to her dad, who explained to the elderly woman “she, shy”.
The woman then asked “how old is she?”. “Um, ah, four, yes.” The little girl squirmed and buried her face in her dad’s windbreaker.
The elderly woman turned again to the child “what’s your name, dearie?” The father again interceded: “her call Alice”. The little girl, still with her face in her dad’s windbreaker, silently nodded affirmation.
Now the elderly woman tried to engage the little girl with even more determination. “Oh what a pretty bunny!”
The little girl whispered “he’s a boy, boys AREN’T pretty”. Her English was better than her dad’s.
“Well then, he is very handsome!” Now the little girl looked at the woman in worried manner.
Probably the old lady, in the little girl’s eyes, was missing a few screws. Boys, as everyone knows, are sometimes handsome (very unlikely!), sometimes bunnies, but NOT both. Never both. This old person must have been expressing frustration that there weren’t enough handsome boys and projecting that lack onto the bunny. An imposition!
[Please understand that I don’t know for certain what the little girl was thinking. I cannot read minds, so it’s all just a guess. But it’s an educated guess. It was clear that the little girl found the old lady a disturbing element, which required careful watching. And somehow the bunny was central to the developing situation.]
The little girl pursed her lips.
“Do you love your bunny?”
The little girl frowned – what an odd thing to ask.
“Does he have a name?”
The little girl nodded.
“So, what’s he called?”In a determined and fierce tone the little girl screamed:
“MINE!!!!!!!!!”
And hid the bunny behind her back.
Consternation. Followed by silence.
Two stops later the old lady got off the bus.
The little girl pulled her bunny back out and whispered “well done, mister Floppy”.
For the first time she smiled.

This is not some inbred European ultra-liberal, nor a devolutionary throwback like Ahmedinejad speaking. This is one of the sharpest tacks in the Washington toolbox.
Helen Thomas has had an illustrious career as the liberal reporter baiting presidents in their den for decades. She's still smart as a whip, despite being older than Adam.
A real sharp cookie, right on the ball.

WHAT LITTLE CHILDREN ARE MADE OF
Most native English-speakers are familiar with the rhyme about what little boys and girls are made of - nasty stuff and sweet stuff respectively.
However, with my YEARS of expertise, I am in a position to confound that opinion.
I actually know what they're made of. Trust me. I have experience.
Plus, I have thoroughly investigated, and tested my conclusions with probing experiments.
Rigorous tests and sampling. Scientific curiosity put into practice.
The little monkeys are made of doughnuts!
This morning, on my way to work, about a hundred children passed me. Sweet grampa, what a reek! Doughnuts! They all stank of doughnuts!
Mind you, I like doughnuts - they're my people's enduring contribution to American culture, now that scalping is no longer practiced - but a hundred little monsters ponging like a doughnut shop is not conducive to good mental health.
It makes them louder. All one hundred. Doughnuts.
Doughnuts also diminish the fear little children naturally have of people in the financial district. They come closer than usual, and sniff the humans.
If there is food in your truck, they will find it. They will rip out your guts.

DUTCH RACE
In reaction to a rather blistering piece I wrote recently about the Dutch and their strident insistence that the Israelis release the pro-Hamas activists on the Mavi Marmara pronto, as well as their automatic hypocritical demand that the Israelis submit to an international inquiry and the usual accusation that of course the Israelis were to blame, I received a comment which was … interesting.
Naturally I responded.

DUTCH HAMAS LEADER ARRESTED.... BY ISRAEL
What the Dutch SHOULD have done years ago, the Israelis did this past weekend; they arrested a dangerous terror-supporter. A Dutchman. A financier of terrorism. A notorious Netherlander of Palestinian ancestry, who moved in the same circles as many "exemplary" Dutch citizens like Gretta Duisenberg, former prime minister Andreas (Dries) van Agt, parliamentarians Anja Meulenbelt and Harry van Bommel.

ISRAEL JUSTIFIED
Israel, for many Jews, means Jewish nationhood. Admittedly, because Israel is a young country, often under attack on its borders, often under fire internationally for a wealth of reasons (some of which are most definitely anti-Semitism in a new guise, some of which are valid complaints blown out of all proportion), there is a defensive quality that operates. Jews are Israel – but not all Jews define the nation Israel the same, not all of them will see the state Israel as the best or only representative of the nation/nationality.
Differences of opinion are valid. Essential, also. But Israel as a state exists – it is a miracle that after so many years of being a pariah among its neighbors in its own land it STILL exists – and many Jews, supporters of Israel (including many critical voices!) are proud of its survival, its achievements, and its sheer chutzpah at maintaining itself in the face of the loathing and hate directed at it by most of the Arab and Muslim world, most of Europe (especially Western Europe, now proudly NOT responsible for the burden of their history), and even many in the US. Especially from Jews who would rather not have been born Jewish, and Jews who are not comfortable with Jews being proud of a country, or celebrating the defiance of their people.
Like the bullied kid on the playground, there are still many who are far more comfortable with being the put-upon Jew among the Gentiles, rather than the feisty little outcaste feared and despised for being different.
Yet it is precisely those attitudes and fears that maintain anti-Semitism. As long as there are Jews who obsequiously apologize for everything Israel does, as long as there are Jews who lavish affection on groups that have no intention of requiting that love, as longs as there are people who justify any enmity and discriminatory act as a valid voice of resistance, there will be a need for Israel to exist, and for Israel to resist.

Without the inspiration of the ideal of Jewish national rebirth, it is quite likely that the Arabs would STILL be mere subjects of the British, French, and Turks.
Zionism, of course, was also profoundly inspiring to many other nations casting off the yoke of empire - the Chinese, the Indonesians, the Indians (yes, EVEN Gandhi and Nehru!), the Yugoslavs, the nations of East Africa.....

That is an accurate assessment.
It wasn't until Yassir Arafat started referring to his own group as "Palestinians" that anyone had even heard of them. Till that time, the term had been applied to Jews who populated the area - who had declared their nationhood a generation earlier, with the approval of the United Nations.
The Arabs who stayed in the land became citizens; the Arabs who left after being encouraged to do so by the defeated Egyptians, Syrians, and other English client-states, became discriminated prisoners in camps, useful as pawns, but by no means fellow citizens of their host-countries.

At the end of her post she also flings some gratuitous bile at the Malays and the Pakistanis - gratuitous, but thoroughly deserved.
Malays, as is well known, still maintain an apartheid society in which Chinese Malaysians, no matter how many generations they have been there (in many cases since the early eighteen hundreds - some even since the sixteen hundreds), are discriminated against in favour of recent Javanese and Sumatran carpet baggers.
Jadi Islam, the verb for converting to the Muslim faith, also means Jadi Melayu: becoming Malay. Still not equal, but far more so than Christians, Buddhists, or Hindus could ever possibly be in Malay society.

That is an accurate assessment.
It wasn't until Yassir Arafat started referring to his own group as "Palestinians" that anyone had even heard of them. Till that time, the term had been applied to Jews who populated the area - who had declared their nationhood a generation earlier, with the approval of the United Nations.
The Arabs who stayed in the land became citizens; the Arabs who left after being encouraged to do so by the defeated Egyptians, Syrians, and other English client-states, became discriminated prisoners in camps, useful as pawns, but by no means fellow citizens of their host-countries.

POSTSCRIPTUM
At the end of her post she also flings some gratuitous bile at the Malays and the Pakistanis - gratuitous, but thoroughly deserved.
Malays, as is well known, still maintain an apartheid society in which Chinese Malaysians, no matter how many generations they have been there (in many cases since the early eighteen hundreds - some even since the sixteen hundreds), are discriminated against in favour of recent Javanese and Sumatran carpet baggers.
Jadi Islam, the verb for converting to the Muslim faith, also means Jadi Melayu: becoming Malay. Still not equal, but far more so than Christians, Buddhists, or Hindus could ever possibly be in Malay society.
Malaysia is a pestilential place.
How much more so Pakistan.

FABULOUS FLYING FUR
As a child I was fascinated by bats. This was a fascination that came about gradually, first prompted by several comic strips, then by some wonderful books about the natural world which my mother had ordered from Blackwell's in England - source of reading material for many transplanted English speakers in the distant frontiers and among the hairy savages.
For several years, whenever another book about bats appeared, I would anxiously await the new shipment from Oxford.
Oddly, such a thing didn't happen often. Not nearly enough.
Eventually I moved on to bigger and better things. Pipes and tobacco. Mediaeval history. Kurt Weil & Bertold Brecht. The age of the Celts. Charlemagne and his paladins. Genghiz Khan. The brutal exploitation of innocent artistic natives by bloodthirsty Europeans during the colonial age.
Still, bats continued to fascinate.
There are at least two bats that live in my neighborhood. After twilight on their street they emerge from the crevasse between two buildings, and fly up and down the block hunting for food. Occasionally I will stand on the corner and observe them for a while.
I think these are Myotis of some sort. Myotis lucifugus? It's the ears, you see. And the colouration. Plus the fact that the nose is snoutlike, rather than rhinolophidous.
There is also a fully membraned tail which can be used to flip a wily bug up towards the mouth.
Little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) and related species eat insects - flies, mosquitoes, gnats, moths, etcetera. They are quite voracious.
Yesterday evening there were three of them. Two larger, one smaller.
Bats in the temperate zone mate in autumn, the single infant is born in spring.
Both of the larger bats may have been female - often pregnant females congregate in a maternity roost, but if only a few of them inhabit a locale, this may not be possible.
This has been a rather wet spring, which guarantees far more pests than usual.
I, for one, would like to welcome junior to the neighborhood, and congratulate his (her?) doting mother on this happy event.

KISS ME, YOU REBEL!
Centuries ago, imperial troops sacked a monastery that supported a previous dynasty, killing thousands of ascetics. Five monks escaped, and fled south, finally meeting up again at the Red Flower Pavilion, to swear vengeance for their murdered brethren, and organize rebellion against the tyrant.
This tale is a fundament not only of the narratives of many Southern Chinese secret societies, but also of much of the Cantonese and Fujianese worldview.
There are two key elements:
ONE – Friendships are a bond stronger in many ways than all other relationships; your friends will stand by you.
TWO – The government and the forces of society are impersonal and often destructive to that which is most worth preserving.
It is, if you will, reflective of a rebellious character. Not surprisingly, revolutions and dissent have often originated south of the great river ('Taai Gong': 大江 ; Gong-naam, "South of the Great River": 江南), most notably in Fujian ('Fok-kien': 福建), where the loyalist of the Ming Dynasty fought desperately for nearly a century against the conquerors, withdrawing at last to Taiwan ('Toi-waan': 臺灣) to continue the struggle for another bitter generation, and in Guangdong (Canton, 'Kwong-tung': 廣東) and Guangxi ('Kwong-sai': 廣西) provinces, where activists for generation after generation joined secret societies and fomented unrest.

Most of the secret societies ended up splitting into three distinct branches: a social and social welfare side, a hunted rebel side, and a criminal side.
All three sides told the tale of the five elders ('Ng-jou': 五祖) fleeing the destruction of Siew-Lam Ji (Shaolin Temple: 少林寺), and stressed the noble aspirations of the outlaws that populate the pages of China’s long fractious history.
For the length of the Ching Dynasty ('Cheng-chiu': 清朝), most Southerners regarded the ruling Manchus ('Mon-juk': 滿族) as vile barbarians opposed in every way to everything that was really Chinese.
It is ironic that the Manchu ruling-class became so thoroughly Chinese in education and outlook that today not even ten percent of them can speak their own native tongue - their flawless Peking pronunciation is envied as the very best Mandarin.

RIVERS AND LAKES
The mental and mostly metaphoric world of Chinese outlaws and rebels is known as gongwu (江湖) – rivers and lakes, representing the wilds and the unsettled marshlands, where gallants (‘how-hon’: 好漢) and chevaliers (‘kiem-hap’: 劍俠) hid out from a repressive government. The embodiment of Chinese ideals was a hero ('yinghong': 英雄) who would risk his own life for his companions and the just cause. Righteousness ('yi': 義) was the most praiseworthy thing a person could possess; the loyalty that inspired that righteousness ('yi-hey': 義氣) was infinitely precious.
Given that most of Chinese history consists of short periods of honest government followed by very long periods of brutal exploitation, misery, and general bureaucratic misrule, it is quite understandable that the common man should seek comfort in such countercultural ideals. What is perhaps surprising is how much of this worldview still exists.
The Cantonese language, without the idioms and metaphors of rebellion and anarchy, would be much poorer, far less expressive. There is a feistiness and imaginary quality to how the Cantonese express themselves that permeates their emotions, their though-processes, their songs, movies, and popular culture.

MORE THAN THE SONG AND THE MOVIE
One might think that the movie is a standard buddy flick, presenting two guys in the slammer going through hell together and coming out better for their friendship.
But that would be overlooking the Cantonese context, and the attitudes that Cantonese people have about loyalty and obligations towards each other. When you're in the same boat, sworn together ('tung-meng': 同盟), you stand in for each other like outlaws in the forests and marshes, rebels in the mountains and wastelands.
The movie is on one level a perfect expression of the Cantonese Weltanshauung, but on another level an entertaining tale of gallantry and stubbornness; both, as I have endeavored to explain, also perfect Cantonese ideals.
The song above is phrased in great part like an oath. It should therefore be no surprise that it is one of the anthems of the Hong Kong Democracy movement.
What may surprise you is that it was written by a woman.
Specifically, by a woman who is not, strictly speaking, Chinese.
Or even from Hong Kong.
Maria Cordero (肥媽瑪俐亞), from Macau, is an actress and singer of mixed Portuguese and Chinese ancestry.
You can't really get more Hong Kong than that!
And Hong Kong is, as you no doubt know, the most 'Cantonese' of cities.

YOUR ENLIGHTENMENT FOR THE WEEK
This is not a sweet-natured post. You have been warned.
Sometime over the weekend, the building replaced the old paper towel dispensers in the bathrooms with new ones.
A few moments ago, our office manager sent out the following e-mail under the subject line 'paper towels in the restrooms':
All,
We have new paper towel dispensers in our restrooms.
Please note; the sensor to make the paper come out is located under the lip not in front. You therefore must place your hand under for it to work.
...
Shortly afterwards this e-mail went out to a limited distribution list:
"
THERE ARE NEW F*(KING PAPER TOWEL DISPENSERS IN THE RESTROOMS.
ALL WILL BE FINE!!!!
"
...
It was in Calibri 72 point type. Bright screaming red.
Perhaps a bit too snarky?

So I answered:
"I for one am so glad he told us. I haven’t used a bathroom for over two weeks, so I would never have found out. Nor would I have EVER guessed that the darn things have sensors. What a miracle of technology.
I just go up to the roof and aim off the edge."

I have just received the following response:
"I will never leave this place without a hazmat suite again...."

NEVER leave the building without protective gear.

It's a learning experience.
