People thinking of taking their first trip to the old world could scarcely do better than to visit the Netherlands and Belgium. There are a number of cities which are well worth visiting, as well as historic places, and a fascinating society and culture.
Three towns suggest themselves: Amsterdam, Antwerp, and Eindhoven.
Amsterdam is the cultural capital of the North, and has many famous museums. It is a lovely city, and strolling around the central part admiring the canals and discovering interesting little stores can happily occupy several hours. There is tasty food, and quite a bit of nightlife too.
Antwerp is the cultural and business capital of the Flemish (Southern Dutch), and in addition to a splendid Gothic Cathedral and a beautiful late mediaeval grand square, has innumerable fine restaurants. Flemish cuisine is extraordinairily good.
Flanders comes vibrantly alive here, and the city is more of a must see and must experience than most settlements of equal age.
It also has museums and nightlife.
Eindhoven is the industrial center in the South-East of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, famous for Philips Electronics, a renowned technical university, research facilities, the Van Abbe Museum, and surprisingly good eateries in the city centre as well as the picturesque surrounding villages. Brabanders live well, and take pride in their cuisine.
The bar scene at night is quite lively.
I usually base myself in Amsterdam, then take day-trips to Antwerp for the food.
I love all three of these cities, but I always make sure to spend some time in Eindhoven and its environs, enjoying the gently rolling countryside and the many hospitable cafes and auberges.
Life, in North Brabant, is more relaxed than elsewhere.
TOPS IN EUROPE
For young people especially, these three cities offer an additional advantage.

KRUPUK - MUCH MORE THAN JUST SHRIMP CHIPS, DEPENDING ON WHOSE MOUTH THEY ARE IN
Back in 2007, when Dovbear was on vacation, I briefly guestposted on his blog.
Not being in any way averse to cannibalizing myself, especially after an interval of four years, that guestpost is now below.

CREATIVE DUTCH INVENT NEW NASTY SLUR
The Dutch language is sodden with slurs and insults. We speakers of Dutch are not known for our subtlety.
A sampling of Dutch terms of misaffection will be illustrative:
Kut-Marokkaan = “Erva-Moroccan” (generic term for any North-African).
Kanker-Jood = Cancerous Jew (generic term for a Jew).
Klote-Jenk = Testicle American (again, a generic term – applies to either gender).
There are many more. Some, like the extremely long list of insulting sixteenth century terms for the different types of German, are scatological. Some are heretical.
Some sneering, and repulsive.
Such as this recent one: Kroepoek
Pronunciation ‘crew-pewk’. Diminutive: kroepoekje - 'crew-pewk-yuh’.
[Krupuk is a crispy snack cracker made of tapioca flour (manioc or cassava starch), seafood flavourings, salt and spices, kneaded to a dough, rolled into a snake shape, sliced thinly across, and dried in the sun. The resultant chips are deepfried when needed – they swell up enormously. They are very popular in South-East Asia and Holland. Called ‘shrimp-chip’ in English. Most are not kosher. There are also entirely vegetarian 'shrimp chips', but I do not know the brand names or whether they are even imported. Sorry.]
As the term applies to a human, what is meant is an attractive woman of partly or entirely Dutch East Indies ancestry, especially one to have a brief and exploitative affair with; a tasty little snack of a woman, but not the kind you would marry. The term is both racist and sexist. And, if you think about it, additionally offensive on so many different levels.
BACKGROUND
Indos are people of an Indonesian background, often of mixed race - Dutch mixed with Malay types or Chinese. They were citizens of the Netherlands, who after Indonesian independence either voluntarily "repatriated" to a country they had never seen , or were later chased out.
In the fifties and sixties, most Indos were self-effacing, and did their very best to assimilate. They were ashamed of their Indischkeit, and spoke excellent proper Dutch in public and at work. Maybe at home they spoke Petshaw, Betawi, or Malay, but they did not want their children to speak it. They were the perfect immigrant group.
Now their children and grandchildren are exploring what it means to be ‘different’. And what it means to have inherited non-standard cultural traits. They do not keep quiet when sneered at, they talk back when patronized, they object to stereotypes.
They are no longer quietly just like ‘everybody else’.
Everybody-else does not like this one bit. It somehow feels like a devaluation of everybody else, and of everybody else's values, or a deliberate insult. Everybody else has a remarkably fragile ego and a tendency to act pissy.
Now, while the point of this may seem to be that majority behaviours show similarities in different countries, especially if you are in the deep South or Rotterdam - and if you wish to read that into this, please do - what I am really doing by posting this is expressing my displeasure at Dutch attitudes.
I expected much better from them, dammit. Buncha farty kaaskoppen.

THE DUTCH ARE OUR FRIENDS!
Often, when I have nothing better to do, I read the Telegraaf newspaper. The Telegraaf is the most popular journal in the Netherlands, and can be said to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Which is pretty damned low and common. Makes even our San Francisco papers look rather high-fallutin' and intellectual.
But then, we have fewer inbred peasants than the old world.
BELGIAN TRAVEL ADVISORY
VS waarschuwen voor België AMSTERDAM - Het officiële reisadvies van de Verenigde Staten geeft een waarschuwing voor toeristen die naar België afreizen.
An article about official cautions to American tourists travelling to Belgium. Like much that is produced by the US government monkey corps, there are a few minor problems.
Such as some nonsense about tourists being robbed with shaving cream on public transportation in Brussels, and the staff at Walloon medical facilities being unable to speak a civilized tongue.
The readers of the Telegraaf have loyally taken up the defense of their neighbors in the comments underneath the article.
A condensed sampling of Dutch opinions about Americans:
"Ze worden daar met de dag dommer..... de grootste criminelen, lopen er in de VS rond..... Amerikanen, die weten niks van wat er in de wereld werkelijk gebeurd. En die media daar om te huilen. We zijn niet door Amerika bevrijd in WW2 maar door de geallieerden. Een borst op de TV en heel amerika is geschokt terwijl de sexindustrie de grootste ter wereld is. Laat ze lekker in hun eigen land blijven. Amerikanen nooit een dommer en kinderlijk volk gezien. We zitten hier niet op die amerikaanse cultuurbarbaren te wachten. Sinds wanneer spreken ze in Amerika iets anders dan Amerikaans? Domme arrogante Amerikanen. Hoe noem je iemand die 3 talen spreekt? Drietalig. Iemand die 2 talen spreekt? Tweetalig. In short, Americans are dumb and getting stupider by the day, are all more or less ignorant criminals whose newspapers are garbage (according to a reader of the Telegraaf, 'nuff said). Furthermore, Americans didn't liberate Europe, that was the Allies.
One titty on the television and all of the United States is horrified! Horrified! The Yanks have the biggest sex industry in the world!
Americans, haha, nothing more than barbarians! They don't even speak decent English over there! Americans are depraved, monolingual, and congenitally criminal, and should above all stay in their own horrid culturally deprived country.
Those are nice Dutch people writing those things. You know, Netherlanders ..... our devoted allies, who keep reminding us of our long friendship and common cause. Dutch people. The people whose politicians smilingly agree with us, in English, at international conferences. The nation which copies so much of our popular culture, and where everybody speaks a version of English because they've been watching almost nothing but American television shows since the sixties.
Remember, the Dutch are our friends. They've told us so, many times.
In our language.
BELGIUM
I have to agree with the Dutch - there is NOTHING wrong with Belgium.
It is in fact far safer everywhere in Flanders and Wallonia than in any large municipality in the Kingdom of The Netherlands, the people are very much cleaner than they are in Holland, and considerably more friendly and polite.
If you have the chance, by all means visit Belgium. The food is delicious - Belgians are deservedly famous for their cooking, unlike the Dutch, who haven't anything even close to 'cuisine'. And Belgian beer is wonderful - neither Amstel nor Heineken are in the same league. Heck, compared to many fine Belgian brews such as Mort Subite, Duvel Moortgat, Leffe, De Koninck, Rodenbach, Callewaerts, and others, both Heineken and Amstel are naught more than pale ditchwater unfit for human consumption.
The only Dutch beer that is even drinkable is Dommelsch Oud Bruin, which is mighty hard to find north of rivers.
Additionally, Belgium has many fine museums and art galleries with helpful staff - unlike the Netherlands, where the staff are uniformly wooden and uncommunicative - and Belgians truly understand that a welcoming attitude and genuine warmth are graces which bring credit to their country - again, unlike the Dutch, who seem to believe that a Golden Age four centuries ago is enough reason for the modern Dutchman to haughtily look down his long unwashed nose at the rest of the world. That characteristic Dutch snootiness is called "deftigheid", by the way. Though the Belgians also understand the word "deftig", they do not use that term in the same way, and they are at times more galled at the rude standoffishness of 'Ollanders than even us Yanks. Many Belgians despair of the Dutch ever becoming truly civilized, and the proximity of such cold fish is all the more irritating because of the similarities of language.
It must be said that Flemish is more mellifluous than that Northern hairball up-barfing gabble of their cousins across the border.
De Vlaamsche 'g', weette gy wel. 't Klinkt gewoon schooner.
Antwerpen has more fine restaurants than Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Utrecht combined, the moules-frites in Brussels are superb, Ghent and Brugge are architectural treasure troves.
Such French-speaking cities as Liège, Dinant, Charleroi, and Namur all have their own abundant charms, not least of which is the rolling countryside of the South. Plus, of course, food as good as anywhere in Belgium.
Hospitality, in whatever language (Flemish: gastvrijheid; Walloon: l’hospitalité) is a Belgian concept.
Truly, if you visit Europe, you should spend at least half of your time in Belgium. You might even want to avoid the rest of the continent altogether, Belgium has more than enough to be the best trip of your life.

DUTCH HATRED TOWARDS EVERYONE
A while ago one of my regular readers wondered at my bitterness toward the Dutch. Surely the Dutch were as deserving of regard as other people?
In the abstract, he is of course absolutely correct.
Yet I refuse to extend them that courtesy.
I lived in that pestilential place for sixteen years as a foreigner.
From age two till age eighteen.
The Dutch are not nice people. Not when the foreigner is from a place they thoroughly despise, or belongs to a creed or ethnic group which they loathe.
An American citizen in Europe during the Vietnam war was probably the most despicable thing the Dutch had ever seen.
Much like a Moroccan Dutch person born in Rotterdam.
Or a Turk doing the job that the average Kaaskop is far too snooty and fastidious to even consider.
Also Jewish people – the number of Jews who are bailing out to their homeland from an increasingly racist and bigoted Europe keeps growing, and at this point many of the Jews left in the Netherlands are of the Uncle Tom type.
They too will eventually learn that living among the Dutch is just not worth it.
Apparently, not even for the Dutch. There are nearly six million of them in the United States, and probably over twenty million Americans who have some Dutch in their veins.
As an example of how thoroughly loathsome, despicable, vile, and pustulent some Dutch people can be, I offer an article in De Telegraaf:

Shan't bother to translate it, as I'm merely placing it here to remind other readers of our language of the sheer gut-wrenching nastiness and stupidity that festers back in the Netherlandish bog.
These are the people to whom we are related, we have the same foul blood running through our veins.

But as Dutch-Americans, we are better than that.

DEN HAAG - Ritueel slachten moet blijven worden toegestaan. Dat is althans waar een student uit Rotterdam voor pleit. De jongen heeft dinsdagmiddag duizenden handtekeningen van gelijkgestemden aangeboden in de Tweede Kamer.
Samen met duizenden anderen is de Rotterdammer, Youssef el Hachioui, tegen het verbod op onverdoofd ritueel slachten.
Hij hoopt dat de Kamer het voorstel van de Partij voor de Dieren verwerpt, zo meldt RTV Rijnmond. Volgens de student staat de godsdientvrijheid van moslims op het spel en is de islamitische gemeenschap verbijsterd.

Als wij pretenderen een "beschaafd" land te zijn (wat dat

Ik vraag me af of deze zogenaamde gelijkgestemden ook zo consequent zijn zich bij de tandarts zonder verdoving te laten behandelen en een operatie ondergaan zonder verdoving. Godsdienstvrijheid is een groot goed, maar ook religies moeten met hun tijd meegaan en niet doen of ze boven algemeen aanvaarde maatschappelijke normen staan. De joodse en islamitische slachtwetten zijn eeuwen geleden in geschreven in een woestijn klimaat, waar hygiene en voedselveiligheid om een zeer specifieke behandeling van vlees en slachtdieren vroeg. Van dierenwelzijn had toen ook nog niemand gehoord. In onze huidige samenleving zijn deze bepalingen onnodig en niet meer van deze tijd.

Unsurprisingly, most of the comments boil down to "go back where you came from, you barbarian swine". There are, additionally, a number of comments that are purely anti-Semitic. Bigotry in Dutch discourse has become very common ('want dat moet toch kunnen!'), and many 'Ollanders are distressed that not everyone thinks like them. Precisely such divergence of opinion is their greatest objection to the entire rest of the world, the one factor that convinces them more than anything else that they themselves are the lone bastion of civilization.
The article mentions that a majority of members of the Labour Party ('Partij van de Arbeid' - PvdA) are against banning 'ritual slaughter'. Naturally this is interpreted as a cynical appeal to potential voters among the foreign element, such as Jews and Muslims.
Because "real" Netherlanders are NEVER either Jewish or Muslim.

DEN HAAG - Ritueel slachten moet blijven worden toegestaan. Dat is althans waar een student uit Rotterdam voor pleit. De jongen heeft dinsdagmiddag duizenden handtekeningen van gelijkgestemden aangeboden in de Tweede Kamer.
Samen met duizenden anderen is de Rotterdammer, Youssef el Hachioui, tegen het verbod op onverdoofd ritueel slachten.
Hij hoopt dat de Kamer het voorstel van de Partij voor de Dieren verwerpt, zo meldt RTV Rijnmond. Volgens de student staat de godsdientvrijheid van moslims op het spel en is de islamitische gemeenschap verbijsterd.

Godsdienstvrijheid is een groot goed, maar ook religies moeten met hun tijd meegaan en niet doen of ze boven algemeen aanvaarde maatschappelijke normen staan. De joodse en islamitische slachtwetten zijn eeuwen geleden in geschreven in een woestijn klimaat, waar hygiene en voedselveiligheid om een zeer specifieke behandeling van vlees en slachtdieren vroeg. There are about thirty thousand Jews - there would've been a lot more, but the Dutch sold most of them to the Germans two generations ago.

There are six million Dutch-Americans. And the Dutch have also emigrated to many other parts of the world.
I was often told that I should just go back where I came from.
Ironic, given that Deursen, where the Dutch side of my family came from back in the fifteen hundreds, is not that far from Valkenswaard, where we lived while my father was employed by Philips Electronics in Eindhoven.
Same province, in fact - North Brabant.
In 1978 I finally did go back where I came from.
I have been back ever since.
Any commonality I have with the Dutch since then is purely accidental.

There are over two hundred 'reacties' underneath today's article concerning kosher and halal slaughter in the Telegraaf:

Unsurprisingly, most of the comments boil down to "go back where you came from, you barbarian swine". There are, additionally, a number of comments that are purely anti-Semitic. Bigotry in Dutch discourse has become very common ('want dat moet toch kunnen!'), and many 'Ollanders are distressed that not everyone thinks like them. Precisely such divergence of opinion is their greatest objection to the entire rest of the world, the one factor that convinces them more than anything else that they themselves are the lone bastion of civilization.
The article mentions that a majority of members of the Labour Party ('Partij van de Arbeid' - PvdA) are against banning 'ritual slaughter'. Naturally this is interpreted as a cynical appeal to potential voters among the foreign element, such as Jews and Muslims.
Because "real" Netherlanders are NEVER either Jewish or Muslim.
Never!
Real Netherlanders are animals.

KOSHER AND HALAL SLAUGHTER IS MURDER!
There is the usual Dutch racist bullpuckey in the comments under an article in De Telegraaf.
In short: Muslims are barbarians, Jews are greedy, halal and kosher slaughter is mediaeval and disgusting, and if those damned foreigners don't like it, they can damn well leave.
The article, of course, has to do with the looming legislation outlawing schechting of animals in the Netherlands.
Both Geert Wilders and the radical eco-movement are in favour of a ban, the Christian parties are opposed.

DUTCH HOWLS ABOUT HALAL AND KASHRUS
And again, an article in Hollands' premier newsrag gives the hatefilled side an opportunity to vent their base prejudices.
Predictably, much Netherlandish ignorance is on display too.
The Dutch, unhampered by any knowledge whatsoever, consider kosher slaughter to be a cruel, mediaeval and barbaric ritual drenched in superstition and voodoo.
Or so it would seem from the venomous comments underneath an article. As of this writing, well over two hundred readers have spewed their opinions.

Translation: 'Just stop that ritual slaughter and no more bullsh*t. If they want to ritually kill (their food) they should just go to wherever they came from, but not here. That mediaeval crap should be over and done with, WE LIVE HERE, AND IN THE YEAR 2010'
Well, there you have it. Jews and Muslims have no place in Holland. Either they cease offending the refined sensibilities of the natives, or they should all get the hell out. Obediently follow the pattern that their neighbors enforce, or leave. Just leave.
It isn't their country, and never will be.
I had not thought it possible that so minute a country could house over two hundred opinions! But actually, it doesn't. They are all mostly the same opinion: Kosher slaughter, and its Muslim equivalent, are disgusting practices that prove Jews and Muslims to be despicable subhumans who have no place in civilized societies. And especially, they should NOT be different. How dare they!
The Dutch majority is always right, and those primitives have no business imposing their deviant practices on decent people.
Difference has never been comfortable in Holland. Being Jewish or Muslim, by Dutch standards, has often seemed an uncharming manifestation of insanity or perversion, much like being provincial, French, or inbred. In the modern era, Jews and Muslims had damned well better adapt.
This is Holland, where the will of the people is sacred and sanctifies all.
Not some theocracy like Iran, Saudi Arabia, or the United States.
NOTE: The article is about the suggestion by the Christian Democrats, Christian Union, and SGP to at least discuss the matter with Jewish and Muslim organizations before imposing laws banning kosher and halal slaughtering.

Geert Wilders' (PVV) and the left wing parties are all for an immediate a ban, and see no point in even debating the issue.

DUTCH TOLERANCE NON-EXISTENT
In a move motivated almost primarily by animus against Jews and Muslims, as is made clear by the tenor of the public noise that has preceded it, the Dutch Government will soon ban kosher slaughter and halal butchering.
Henceforth the animal must be entirely unconscious before being killed.
The commentary on webpages and underneath articles in the Dutch language press make it overwhelmingly clear that the Dutch loathe and despise all other religions than their own narrow branches of Calvinism and Catholicism.
In particular, many of them think that Judaism and Islam are primitive and barbaric superstitions which are absurd, backwards, and repulsive.

The vote in the parliament will have a majority, now that the Dutch Labour Party has thrown its support behind the proposal. Debate next week is expected to be short, and the subsequent vote quick. The sentiment moving the issue is primarily anti-Muslim, but a sneering dislike for Jews has also been evident in the ranks.
Proposing the ban: PvdD (Party for Animals - basically the political wing of the ecoterrorist and Vegan movements).
In favour: PvdA (labour), PVV (Geert Wilders), SP (rebranded Stalinists), Green Left (rabid fringe), D66 (just plain confused).
Still not decided: VVD (Liberals).
Opposing: CDA (Christian Democrats), Christian Union, and SGP.
I shall henceforth avoid all Dutch food products, as well as Netherlandish alcoholic beverages.

SHARIA4HOLLAND
An organization styling itself Shari4Holland recently called on the Dutch Muslims to rise up and impose Sharia in the Netherlands - by violent means if necessary.
In reader-feedback underneath a Telegraaf article concerning Sharia4Holland, this comment stood out:

There are already 753 comments underneath the article about Geert Wilders calling for their expulsion. Most writers tend toward extreme and intolerant, several are off their rocker entirely and clearly present a danger to public order and the safety of their less melanin-deprived fellow-citizens.
A disturbingly large percentage are psychopaths.
[UPDATE December 23rd, at 9:43 AM Pacific Time: 869 comments. Overwhelming majority of which are rabidly anti-Muslim, most of them completely irrational.]
There are hardly any comments by Dutch Muslims there - not surprising, as they are less than 6% of the population, and few of them would wish to read the Telegraaf. There are better newspapers.
Rachid Sharif, there is no need to worry - Sharia4Holland represents a minute fraction of a minority.
There are hundreds of thousands of Muslims in the Netherlands. The number of liberal, free-thinking, college educated Muslims in Amsterdam alone outnumbers all the mal-adjusted loonies and nutballs who think like Shari4Holland by a fare-thee-well.
Islamic law in Holland just ain't likely.
The problem is that much is made of basket-cases like Sharia4Holland by paranoid types and rabble-rousers, NO attention is given to people who lead quiet middle-class lives and don't make waves.
Moroccan-Dutch petty crime? That's news, and angry rhetoric. It sells copies of De Telegraaf.
Sane and stable Moroccan-Dutch householder paying taxes? No, sorry folks, that just isn't interesting. Perhaps if he bit someone, or won a talent show?
Frankly, I worry less about the six percent of the population who are Muslim than about the beer-sodden bigots and weed-crazed illiterates among the native Dutch; Geert Wilders et al.
There's just so darned many of them.

DUTCH JEWS, LEAVE!
I'm using my comments underneath a post on Dovbear’s blog as the basis for this piece.
BOLKENSTEIN
Prominent Dutch politician Frits Bolkestein sparked an uproar in the Netherlands by saying practicing Jews had "no future here, and should emigrate to the US or Israel"
Dov, naturally, found that reprehensible. That a politician would say that Jews should leave 'for their own good' should normally be considered ipso facto anti-Semitic.
Normally the government might actually gave a damn, and the police could actually do their job.
But this is the Netherlands we're talking about.

Plainly put, Fritz Bolkenstein has no confidence in either the Dutch government OR the Dutch population to put an end to anti-Semitism, which he blames on the non-assimilation of Moroccans and Turks (sly jab at the Labour Party, who are widely held responsible for the 'gedoog beleid' policies that led to this situation), and he frankly advises Jews that the Netherlands is neither safe, nor tolerant.
He is a pessimist. As are a number of others.
Do I think Jews have a future in the Netherlands? Hell no. Fudge no.
Nor would I advise anyone to walk around wearing a kippah in even the Netherlands' most Jewish city - Amsterdam - because it might mean their life. Like Bolkenstein, I would suggest that all Dutch Jews emigrate.
Unlike Bolkenstein, I would further suggest that they emigrate PRIMARILY to San Francisco, but that's because I am a self-serving opportunist.
I could use more Dutch-speakers here with whom I can agree.
The current bunch are mostly pricks.
DUTCH MUSLIMS
There are about 800 thousand Muslim Dutch, primarily of North-African and Turkish ancestry. Many of them were born in the Netherlands. They aren’t immigrants by any standard, though they are not considered ‘native’ (“autochtoon”). They dominate certain neighborhoods in most of the inner cities.
Coincidentally, that would also be where most Dutch Jews reside. One might possibly say that then the problem would be easily resolved by moving Jews out to the provinces....... except that that is where Stormfront Netherlands resides.
Unlike Bolkenstein and many others, I do not blame the Moroccan and Turkish Dutch. Their venomous anti-Semitism could not thrive if the Dutch did not tolerate it. The Dutch cannot claim that it throve outside of their sight, it was plainly visible for an entire generation.
It was allowed to flourish by Dutch politicians and Dutch society, and it was conveniently overlooked, because it seemed to serve as an admirable outlet, and as an occasionally useful political voice when Dutch society had a fit over what the Israelis were doing to those poor, poor Palestinians.
Claiming that it's only the Muslim-Dutch is a cop-out. It's a nice try at plausible deniability, but it doesn't hold water.
Again, I do not blame the Muslim Dutch - their anti-Semitism is a thoroughly Netherlandish product.
I blame the Dutch.
By the way, calling Bolkenstein, as a former VVD parliamentarian, a rightist, is, in the American context, more than absurd. The VVD are liberals, and only right-wing by Dutch standards.
By US Republican standards, the agenda of the VVD is damn’ near filthy communist.

He is a pessimist. As are a number of others.
Do I think Jews have a future in the Netherlands? Hell no. Fudge no.
Nor would I advise anyone to walk around wearing a kippah in even the Netherlands' most Jewish city - Amsterdam - because it might mean their life. Like Bolkenstein, I would suggest that all Dutch Jews emigrate.
Unlike Bolkenstein, I would further suggest that they emigrate PRIMARILY to San Francisco, but that's because I am a self-serving opportunist.
I could use more Dutch-speakers here with whom I can agree.
The current bunch are mostly pricks.
DUTCH MUSLIMS
There are about 800 thousand Muslim Dutch, primarily of North-African and Turkish ancestry. Many of them were born in the Netherlands. They aren’t immigrants by any standard, though they are not considered ‘native’ (“autochtoon”). They dominate certain neighborhoods in most of the inner cities.
Coincidentally, that would also be where most Dutch Jews reside. One might possibly say that then the problem would be easily resolved by moving Jews out to the provinces....... except that that is where Stormfront Netherlands resides.
Unlike Bolkenstein and many others, I do not blame the Moroccan and Turkish Dutch. Their venomous anti-Semitism could not thrive if the Dutch did not tolerate it. The Dutch cannot claim that it throve outside of their sight, it was plainly visible for an entire generation.
It was allowed to flourish by Dutch politicians and Dutch society, and it was conveniently overlooked, because it seemed to serve as an admirable outlet, and as an occasionally useful political voice when Dutch society had a fit over what the Israelis were doing to those poor, poor Palestinians.
Claiming that it's only the Muslim-Dutch is a cop-out. It's a nice try at plausible deniability, but it doesn't hold water.
Again, I do not blame the Muslim Dutch - their anti-Semitism is a thoroughly Netherlandish product.
I blame the Dutch.
By the way, calling Bolkenstein, as a former VVD parliamentarian, a rightist, is, in the American context, more than absurd. The VVD are liberals, and only right-wing by Dutch standards.
By US Republican standards, the agenda of the VVD is damn’ near filthy communist.

Notorious Dutch anti-Semite Gretta Duisenberg is suing Elsevier magazine and author Afshin Ellian for calling her an anti-Semite. Basically, the noted anti-Semitic harpy Duisenberg is upset that there is an unpleasant name for her type.

The belief that rich Jews direct international politics should probably be considered part and parcel of European Culture by now, much like xenophobia and soccer riots.
One of Gretta's more eccentric statements was physiognomical:
"Israëli's liegen altijd. Dat zie je aan die koppen. Schoften zijn het" (Israelis always lie. You can see that from their heads. They're brutes).
There are far too many anti-Semitic utterances of hers to list here, as she's a tireless hate-speechifier and a publicity-whore of no mean aptitude.

CRAB FOO YUNG
One of the pleasures of San Francisco is the crab season, which usually starts around early November and lasts through May or June. Just go down to the wharf and pick up some freshly steamed crabs to eat at home, or head into Chinatown and buy the little buggers fresh and kicking. Nothing beats a big bowl of steaming Cioppino with a hunk of crusty sourdough on the side, or you could simply whack 'em, crack 'em, and stir-fry them with ginger, scallions, garlic.......
[Cioppino, despite the Italian-sounding name, is not something they've ever tasted in Europe. It was invented right here in San Francisco by immigrant fishermen, and can only be prepared properly in the Bay Area.]
Angry crustacean, suitably dealt with, plus mayonnaise, melted butter, black-bean sauce, or chili-garlic sauce…… it's quite the best way of spending a long quiet evening that I know.
If you don't live here, you might be out of luck. Crab is not widely available away from the coast, and outside of South-East Asia not common either. It's almost unknown in Northern Europe, even in maritime countries.
In fact, the only time that most Europeans were ever exposed to crabs was when they were in the army, but since they've abolished the draft over there even that is no longer the case.
A lucky few may have visited a "Chinese Restaurant" and ordered Crab Foo Yung.
In its true version, Crab Foo Yung is actually a pretty decent dish, and a sensible way of stretching an expensive seasonal ingredient to serve a number of people.
It's also an easy choice here in San Francisco if you don't want the fuss of shells and messy fingers.
北京飯店
[Restaurant Peking]
As a youth living in North Brabant, the discovery that you could actually get good food at a Chinese restaurant was a revelation – it isn’t ALL fake-Indonesian chow cooked to the abysmal taste of the locals.
I remember some eppes lovely steamed fish with chilies and peanuts that I had at the 北京飯店 in ........ (some provincial Dutch burg of around thirty thousand inhabitants).
Some of the stuff on the regular menu was also very good. I really need to emphasize that.
The cooks were from Hong Kong, the head waiter was from Shanghai, the owners were from Zhejiang.
These are all places where real food is appreciated. Consequently that restaurant was, at that time, a shining beacon of light in a nasty cold dark culinary wasteland.
Oh, and the waitress who worked there for several months in 1972 was an absolute doll.
It was because of her that I encouraged my parents to forego cooking and get take-out more often.
Yes, a convenient suggestion. But oh so self-serving.
One of the dishes my mother liked was one she recognized from American Chinese restaurants: Crab Foo Yung.
Or, as it's called in Dutch, Foe Jong Hai.
芙蓉蟹
[Fu Yung Hai - Velvety omelette with crab meat]
1兩 (one ounce) 蟹肉 (crab meat).
2支 (two stalks) 青蔥 (scallion).
4個 (four) 蛋 (eggs).
少許 (pinch) 鹽 Salt).
2大匙 (two tablespoons) 油 (oil).
½杯 (half a cup) 高湯 (superior stock).
1大匙 (one tablespoon) 醬油 (soy sauce).
½小匙 (half a teaspoon) 大白粉 (tapioca flour).
少許 (pinch) 糖 (sugar).
Remove all shell fragments from the crab meat, rinse and chop the scallion. Gently beat the eggs till smooth, add the pinch of salt, the oil, the crab meat, and the chopped scallion.
Mix the tapioca flour with a little cold water.
Heat some oil in the wok, pour in the egg mixture, cook till barely set, and slide onto a plate. Wipe any fragments of the omelette out of the wok, add a drizzle oil, and when hot pour in the superior stock and soy sauce, adding the pinch of sugar. After two minutes or so of cooking, stir in the dissolved tapioca flour and when the sauce becomes glossy pour it over the omelette. Add a drizzle of fragrant sesame oil and some minced cilantro if you must.
You will note that in this recipe tapioca flour is specified. But you could also use corn flour, it would simply require a little more. For the Chinese style superior stock you may substitute the normal chicken and bones stock. And feel free to use more crab meat.

I was already planning to post this recipe when I chanced upon an article in the Telegraaf (a Dutch newspaper).
Remarkably, it deals with Chinese people and crabs. The Chinese are very fond of crab.

I wonder how 'local' the Guangzhou Daily actually is - there's more distance between Guangzhou and Nanjing (approx 1300 miles) than between Amsterdam and Marseilles. Several different Chinese language zones in between, and cultural differences besides. But, to the myopic Dutch, the geography of the rest of the world is both telescoped and condensed.
Comments placed underneath the article by Dutch readers were, of course, "instructive".
About half of the hundred-plus comments were venomous reflections of Dutch bigotry, ignorance, and a sneering sense of superiority, phrased in the most insulting and loathsome manner - a lot of Dutch people are racists who are absolutely convinced that they and they alone represent civilization, the rest of the world is unredeemably barbaric.
The rest of the reader comments were evenly divided between silly humour, Vegan-inspired sanctimony, and realists pointing out that the Dutch themselves were no saints when it came to food.
AFTERWORD
Many Dutch have no idea where their food comes from, but nevertheless see fit to criticize the rest of the world for its culinary practices. This is evident every time I hear tourists speaking Dutch on Grant Avenue and Stockton Street - at such moments I am always ever so grateful that at least they jabber in their own tongue, rather than venting their racism and praeconceptiva in English.
According to many Dutch tourists, live seafood being offered for sale is both barbaric and quaint, live birds are subject to unimaginable cruelty, and many of the ingredients that Chinese use are foul and distasteful.
Other than the picturesque colourfulness of 'those people', they have no good words for Chinatown at great and inordinate length.
Hmmmm.
Eels are sold live at the wekelijksche straatmarkt in Dutch cities and crustaceans are cooked live in their restaurants, many Hollanders in the provinces keep chickens in their back yards and casually twist the birds necks when they are required for dinner, and as far as odd ingredients are concerned, well, perhaps a nation that eats zure zult (sour headcheese), slavinken (bacon-wrapped fatty panfried ground pork), osseworst (raw red ox tartare), snert (pea porridge), deep-fried hockey pucks (bami schijf, nasi schijf, kroket), and puts mayonnaise on EVERYTHING should be more hesitant about their food opinions?
Mayonnaise, Fercrapsakes! Yeah, it's good stuff..... but good lord almighty!
Just another example of pissantry, I guess.
SELLING FOOD IN THE HINTERLANDS
In the backwoods districts of the British Isles, the Benelux, Germany, and France, the local Chinese restaurateurs can reckon on a certain level of coarseness among the clientele, as well as a cheapness beyond compare.
So, rather than acquiring fresh crab, which their customers would not recognize or appreciate anyhow, they use tinned crab meat. And because their customers expect much for very little, they extend the dish with tinned peas. For that exotic touch, they'll throw in some tinned bamboo shoots, perhaps some tinned mushrooms, and lastly, to add both the colour and vulgarity that counters the native gloom, the sauce may be additionally tarted-up with ketchup, sugar, and red food colouring.
Then chopped ham is added - I may have mentioned that the customers expect much for very little, yes?
Truth be told, the best Chinese food in Europe is NOT something that many Europeans could possibly ever appreciate.
Particularly not most Dutch.

Remove all shell fragments from the crab meat, rinse and chop the scallion. Gently beat the eggs till smooth, add the pinch of salt, the oil, the crab meat, and the chopped scallion.
Mix the tapioca flour with a little cold water.
Heat some oil in the wok, pour in the egg mixture, cook till barely set, and slide onto a plate. Wipe any fragments of the omelette out of the wok, add a drizzle oil, and when hot pour in the superior stock and soy sauce, adding the pinch of sugar. After two minutes or so of cooking, stir in the dissolved tapioca flour and when the sauce becomes glossy pour it over the omelette. Add a drizzle of fragrant sesame oil and some minced cilantro if you must.
You will note that in this recipe tapioca flour is specified. But you could also use corn flour, it would simply require a little more. For the Chinese style superior stock you may substitute the normal chicken and bones stock. And feel free to use more crab meat.

I was already planning to post this recipe when I chanced upon an article in the Telegraaf (a Dutch newspaper).
Remarkably, it deals with Chinese people and crabs. The Chinese are very fond of crab.

I wonder how 'local' the Guangzhou Daily actually is - there's more distance between Guangzhou and Nanjing (approx 1300 miles) than between Amsterdam and Marseilles. Several different Chinese language zones in between, and cultural differences besides. But, to the myopic Dutch, the geography of the rest of the world is both telescoped and condensed.
Comments placed underneath the article by Dutch readers were, of course, "instructive".
About half of the hundred-plus comments were venomous reflections of Dutch bigotry, ignorance, and a sneering sense of superiority, phrased in the most insulting and loathsome manner - a lot of Dutch people are racists who are absolutely convinced that they and they alone represent civilization, the rest of the world is unredeemably barbaric.
The rest of the reader comments were evenly divided between silly humour, Vegan-inspired sanctimony, and realists pointing out that the Dutch themselves were no saints when it came to food.
AFTERWORD
Many Dutch have no idea where their food comes from, but nevertheless see fit to criticize the rest of the world for its culinary practices. This is evident every time I hear tourists speaking Dutch on Grant Avenue and Stockton Street - at such moments I am always ever so grateful that at least they jabber in their own tongue, rather than venting their racism and praeconceptiva in English.
According to many Dutch tourists, live seafood being offered for sale is both barbaric and quaint, live birds are subject to unimaginable cruelty, and many of the ingredients that Chinese use are foul and distasteful.
Other than the picturesque colourfulness of 'those people', they have no good words for Chinatown at great and inordinate length.
Hmmmm.
Eels are sold live at the wekelijksche straatmarkt in Dutch cities and crustaceans are cooked live in their restaurants, many Hollanders in the provinces keep chickens in their back yards and casually twist the birds necks when they are required for dinner, and as far as odd ingredients are concerned, well, perhaps a nation that eats zure zult (sour headcheese), slavinken (bacon-wrapped fatty panfried ground pork), osseworst (raw red ox tartare), snert (pea porridge), deep-fried hockey pucks (bami schijf, nasi schijf, kroket), and puts mayonnaise on EVERYTHING should be more hesitant about their food opinions?
Mayonnaise, Fercrapsakes! Yeah, it's good stuff..... but good lord almighty!
Just another example of pissantry, I guess.
SELLING FOOD IN THE HINTERLANDS
In the backwoods districts of the British Isles, the Benelux, Germany, and France, the local Chinese restaurateurs can reckon on a certain level of coarseness among the clientele, as well as a cheapness beyond compare.
So, rather than acquiring fresh crab, which their customers would not recognize or appreciate anyhow, they use tinned crab meat. And because their customers expect much for very little, they extend the dish with tinned peas. For that exotic touch, they'll throw in some tinned bamboo shoots, perhaps some tinned mushrooms, and lastly, to add both the colour and vulgarity that counters the native gloom, the sauce may be additionally tarted-up with ketchup, sugar, and red food colouring.
Then chopped ham is added - I may have mentioned that the customers expect much for very little, yes?
Truth be told, the best Chinese food in Europe is NOT something that many Europeans could possibly ever appreciate.
Particularly not most Dutch.

RACIST DUTCH - READERS OF DE TELEGRAAF
Letter sent to a mailinglist whose members write mostly in Dutch.
The English language portion at the very end indicates that there is a certain amount of, shall we say, "frustration", inherent in what I wrote. Reading Dutch newspaper articles (and other Dutch texts) on the internet can prompt a revulsion in the reader who isn't Dutch, but nevertheless understands that language.

Voor hen die er die typisch stupiede Ollandsche meningen over Amerikanen en hun origine op na houden: Het Engelsche deel van mijn familie zit sinds voor 1620 in Amerika, het Nederlandsche sinds 1630, en het Schots-Iersche vanaf de jaren 1700. Er is ook een veugje "native American" in de stamboom - voor hun achtergrond kunt ge dat hier vinden:

Al met al zijn wij hier al vier eeuwen, meer dan dertien generaties. Da's langer dan Nederland een koninkrijk is geweest, langer dan België bestaat, langer dan Duitsland of Italië verenigde landen zijn geweest, langer dan dat Katholieken hun godsdienst in Nederland konden beoefenen, en langer dan er democratische kiesrecht in de laag landen is geweest.
En zowiezo stukken langer dan dat het merendeel van de wereld zichzelve onafhankelijke naties kan noemen.
Dat is ook langer dan dat menig van ulieden zich 'Surinamer' mogen wanen.
Zijn ulieden dan eigenlijk wel Surinamers?
Bestaat er zelfs zoiets?
Van de allochthonen onder u-allen verwacht ik weldoordachte meningen.
Van de "AUTOCHTHONEN" op deze lijst wens ik pertinent niets, maar dan ook niets, te horen.
