Their success will be described as a victory.
Nevertheless, I shall show "solidarity" with the rowdy people of Oakland. Specifically, by refusing to purchase anything made there, and by not patronizing any of the businesses in that stinking hellhole till Wall Street falls.
There is no there there, and nothing that anyone would want anyway.
If the Oakland Police Department do not intend to use water cannons to clear the air, the entire town should burn down.
The less anyone has to do with that place, the better.

THE PALESTINIAN TRAGEDY
If the lesson of the Shalit deal for the Palestinians is that the language of force works, then that must also be the lesson for Israel.
Force works.
It's the one thing that both Hamas and the PLO can agree on.
Negotiating with the Palestinians is pointless. Negotiation has been going on since Oslo, and has yielded little more than further violence, and insulting excuses for that violence from the Europeans and the third-world gangsters of the United Nations.
"Oh those poor Palestinians, it is because they are UNFULFILLED that they have no choice but to try and kill as many Israelis as possible. Surely you understand that?"
The Palestinian national movement has an unbroken history of despicable acts against Jews, against Christians, and against Muslims.
It was too much to hope for that they would change if they were given a chance.
They've had that chance, they've had innumerable chances, for nearly two decades.
What they've done with the opportunity presented them by the Oslo Accords is kill and maim more Israelis than they had succeeded in doing in the preceding twenty years.
The Palestinian national movement is, and always has been, morally bankrupt.
END THE OCCUPATION!
That the PLO is still operational is due to the idiocy of hopeful people outside of the Holy Land, as well as the despicable opportunism of certain countries that for politics sake play with human lives.
Most of Europe. Almost all the Arab countries. The East-bloc, the communist world, and many of the rinky-tink banana republics in Latin America and Africa.
As well as many befuddled Christians in the United States.
It is an intolerable cruelty to put any member of the PLO in a position of authority over the Palestinians, and more than anything else it perpetuates Arab upon Arab violence, political terror, and corruption.
Why anyone thought it would be any different, given what Arafat and his murderers had done in Jordan and Lebanon, is an utter mystery.
Enabling that man, and the Tunis gang, to enrich themselves while running roughshod over the hopes and aspirations of their people, must certainly qualify as one of the greatest crimes against humanity. That the Europeans and Americans funded (and continue to fund) the mafia syndicate that tyrannizes the populations of the camps and the territory gained in 1967 is a black mark that surely must sicken every civilized human being.
And that the Arab world cynically continues to pay lip-service to Abbas and the PA's bluster, lends moral support to PLO thuggery, and denies the Palestinians any other future than more of the same, dishonours the Arabs far more than any of their other shameful acts.
It is no wonder Palestinian society is so dysfunctional, and hardly surprising that they venerate psychopaths.
With the encouragement of their fellow Arabs, they've cultivated brutism, irrationality, and destructiveness for over sixty years
It is time to break off all negotiations.
No peace is possible with the heirs of Yassir Arafat.

THEY SHOULD THINK TEN TIMES: PAKISTANI ARROGANCE AND BLUSTER
Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani says that the United States "should think ten times" before acting against the Haqqani terrorists operating out of Waziristan.
I am certain that he has been misquoted.
What the general probably meant to convey was "please go ahead and bomb all of Waziristan to smithereens, and I'm really frightfully sorry about the treacherous way we've been dealing with you Americans, what with pocketing your dough and using it to continue supporting the violent barbarism of a bunch of inbred psychopaths."
Yep. That's got to be it.
Surely Ashfaq Parvez Kayani would not bite the hand that feeds him.
BULLIES, BRUTES, CONMEN, CROOKS, RAPISTS, AND THIEVES
If you think you might have noticed a wee bit of dislike for Pakistan in the paragraph above, you are not mistaken.
Pakistanis are a depraved and repulsive lot.
Most Pakistanis hate America, and it is high time we repay them in kind.
The Pakistani government at present consists of scoundrels, bigots, and grubbers, and in that regard it perfectly epitomizes the primary characteristics that define Pakistani nationhood.
With the likely exception of General Pervez Musharraf, the leaders of Pakistan have all been venal, opportunistic, and vile. Several Pakistani politicos have been demented, some have had untreated venereal disease running in their families for generations, and quite a few have been obsessed with entirely imaginary American and Israeli conspiracies.
That same streak of paranoid stupidity is also well-represented in Pakistani society, and is the second reason I absolutely refuse to set foot in any of the Pakistani restaurants here in San Francisco.
[The first reason is that they cut corners, substitute poor quality ingredients whenever possible, lie on their menus, use meats and vegetables past their prime or already spoiled, and have a near-complete disregard for hygiene. The less said about Suleiman and his bestial cronies, the better. Most Pakistanis cannot be trusted to run a clean restaurant, precisely like their politicians cannot be trusted to run an honest government.]
Probably the biggest mistake George Bush ever made was giving the Pakistanis a choice back in 2001, when he told them they could either join with us or get bombed by us.
We should have simply destroyed Islamabad instead.
The Paki - Taleb - Al Qaeda axis would have been damaged far more than has been done yet.
The only reason why it still exists, despite our pummeling of the Taliban for ten years, notwithstanding the death of Osama Bin Laden and several other key-terrorists, is the substantial support from the Pakistani government, army, ulema, and population.
If America cannot be relied on to eradicate Pakistan, the world will have to leave it to India.
We can be sure that Islamabad will give them a very good pretext.

In the meantime, however, we can and should turn the mountainous terrain of Waziristan into a perfectly flat sheet of glass.

A few years ago I wrote a post that, upon revisiting, I realized was far too mild and bland.
Still, worth considering again, and rereading it might give you a nice warm feeling.

Both places are also unbearably precious and full of themselves.
Whether either place is better than Pakistan is debatable.

Malays, as is well known, still maintain an apartheid society in which Chinese Malaysians, no matter how many generations they have been there (in many cases since the early eighteen hundreds - some even since the sixteen hundreds), are discriminated against in favour of recent Javanese and Sumatran carpet baggers.
Jadi Islam, the verb for converting to the Muslim faith, also means Jadi Melayu: becoming Malay. Still not equal, but far more so than Christians, Buddhists, or Hindus could ever possibly be in Malay society.
Malaysia is a pestilential place.

MUSLIMS PREVENTING VISITS TO CHRISTIAN SITES
One of the main reasons for the Crusades was the reprehensible attitude of Muslim tyrants to the Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. Having seized control over the holy places, and massacred Christians and Jews during their conquest, generations of Islamic warlords either outright forbade Christians and Jews from worshipping and visiting the sacred sites of their religions, or seized pilgrims and sold them at slave auctions.
In all, Muslim hegemony over other peoples' lands was horrific, barbaric, and rapacious.
One bright spot is the behaviour of the Turks.
Now the blight of Mohammedan bigotry and strongarmism has returned.

One of Britain's premiere choirs is being prevented from performing in Bethlehem following a Palestinian protest over its scheduled performance in Israel.
The choir of Clare College, Cambridge, will sing Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" with the Israel Camerata Orchestra, but may not visit and perform in St George's Cathedral in East Jerusalem and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where it was invited to sing by the Anglican bishop of Jerusalem, according to Tim Frank's Jerusalem Diary published Monday by the BBC.
The choir is being stymied in its efforts to visit areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority following a letter from the London-based Palestine Solidarity Campaign asking the choir to cancel its trip to Israel, saying it would "appear indifferent to Palestinian suffering."
The Palestinian Authority then asked the bishop of Jerusalem to withdraw the choir's invitation to sing in eastern Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and informed the choir that its members would not be welcome in Bethlehem as part of the bishop's pilgrimage.

PRO-ARAB RUNNING DOGS: THE SF BAY AREA PROGRESSIVES
I am pleased to see that Dr. Mike's little talk to the audience of the Rachel Corrie flick did not go unnoticed. Nay, it even generated a critical review from one of the supporters of the ISM that is delightfully over the top.
The author, who goes by the nomdeguerre of 'M', does more to discredit his or her own side than any amount of shrill hysterics at a riot could manage.
And I love him (or her) for it.
Consider this lovely quote:

STEPHEN PEARCY AND JOSEPH ANDERSON AT THE BFUU
Rabbosai, a number of comments under a recent post are so interesting that I really must bring them to your attention. The post was an action alert forwarded from San Francisco Voice for Israel / Stand With Us, for a protest yesterday evening at the Berkeley Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists (BFUU).
The reason for the protest was BFUU hosting the controversial self-hating anti-Semite, apologist for terror, and Israel-hater Gilad Atzmon in a charity performance organized by Bay Area Women in Black on behalf of the friends of Hamas and Hezbollah (the ISM).

That was, if I recall correctly, Stephen Pearcy - looking amazingly buff now that he's in the market again (I don't believe for a moment that he and Virginia are back together - after over a dozen years of living with her abuser, she's finally realized that even if she LIKES being taken, she can do better). Also please note that he's had his teeth whitened and his hair colour 'corrected', which rather suggests that age is creeping up on him. Given his target "audience, that cannot be a good thing.

Not quite sure of the age differential between them, he's eighteen or nineteen years older than her (they married four years after she moved into his house, when she finally turned eighteen).

FLING POO AT THE JEW
There is no better way to put it: the pro-Palestinian side are a bunch of monkeys. Who else flings poo? I'm not talking metaphorical poo (yes, they fling that too), but very real poo. Smelly poo.
Faeces, fewmets, caca, skyte, and shizzle.
GRANDLAKE POO
It happened this past Saturday in front of the Grandlake Theater in Oakland.
Every Saturday the anti-Israel side holds a dreary one hour vigil on one side of the street, the pro-Israel side has a happy get-together with signs and flags on the other side of the street.
The anti-Israel side consists of Jews of convenience (Jewish only when it is convenient to be Jewish), old Presbyterian sourpusses, random Jew-haters, and the two lonely oldest surviving Anarcho-Syndicalists in the Bay Area.
The pro-Israel side includes a broad spectrum: Jews of INconvenience (Jewish at ALL times, not just when it is strategically useful to have a Jew in the ranks), lefties, righties, non-Jewish religious, atheists, anarchists, new-age, conservadoxim, reform, and of course the erev rav.
Real people. People like you and me.
Occasionally, pedestrians or drivers-by will holler something egregious at either side. Or voice some kind of encouragement. Or just scream. Loud and long.

INFANDOUS!
Something described as infandous is "too odious to be expressed or mentioned." The word was recently used by mr. Alykhan Velshi to describe British Member of Parliament George Galloway.

The act states: "A permanent resident or a foreign national is inadmissible on security grounds for:
(a) engaging in an act of espionage or an act of subversion against a democratic government, institution or process as they are understood in Canada;
(b) engaging in or instigating the subversion by force of any government;
(c) engaging in terrorism;
(d) being a danger to the security of Canada;
(e) engaging in acts of violence that would or might endanger the lives or safety of persons in Canada; or
(f) being a member of an organisation that there are reasonable grounds to believe engages, has engaged or will engage in acts referred to in paragraph (a), (b) or (c)."

Much as I am filled with glee over this utterly delightful turn of events, and even though George Galloway is such an odious piece of pustulant subhuman garbage that his name may induce fits of vomitting by people of delicate sensibilities, I do not support banning his entry.

Let the man speak. Let his repulsive thoughts be vented. Above all, counter-argue him and his brain-rotted fanclub. Prove him wrong, and prove his ideology depraved.
Then arrest him and his fiendish supporters for engaging in an act of espionage or an act of subversion against a democratic government, institution or process as they are understood in Canada; engaging in or instigating the subversion by force of any government; engaging in terrorism; being a danger to the security of Canada; engaging in acts of violence that would or might endanger the lives or safety of persons in Canada; and being a member of an organisation that there are reasonable grounds to believe engages, has engaged or will engage in acts referred to in paragraph a, b or c.

You will have observed that the tirade above was posted on Indybay. Where you will find any number of hatefilled posts and comments, and almost obsequious praise of foreign dictators and tyrants.
In case you did not know, I should also mention that Indymedia has a very low level of tolerance for freedom of speech. Here in the Bay Area, Indybay is notorious for allowing almost any amount of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel commentary - the two types often run together - but assiduously scrubbing every dissenting voice from underneath the post in question as soon as possible.
There is additionally a well-established pattern of support for violent and criminal behaviour which speaks for itself. Morality, in the final analysis, is NOT a concern of Indybay, and ethics is a concept of which they have no grasp.
One would also be hard put to find any balance whatsoever on their site - "fair" and "objective" are just not part of their policy.
They will not allow impressions which do not accord with their agenda.
Many Indymedia sites have been taken over by extremists. Which is not surprising. Given their demographic.
ANTI-SEMITIC ATMOSPHERE
Stating that one is pro-Israel in the Bay Area is a dangerous thing to do.
In many places here, such an admission elicits threats of violence and assertions that one is deficient, morally crippled, a sexual deviant, and should be brutally violated with a blunt object. Unless the freedom-loving individual who offers these suggestions prefers, instead, to promise this treatment to your loved ones.
Infinite variations on these themes are possible.
So it is remarkable (but not surprising) to find the SF Board of Supervisors, who are on the whole a remarkably level-headed bunch of people, accused of such dissidence as averred above. Given the level of anti-Semitism in the Bay Area, they deserve praise for their patience, and for putting up with the revolutionary rhetoric of hate.
Wearing a kippah on campus at Berkeley or San Francisco State University is an open invitation to insult and abuse, with what seems like the blessing of faculty and administration - because, of course, the person flinging poo is merely exercising free speech rights in defense of the poor helpless third-worlders hurling tiny pebbles at big wasp imperialist tanks.
Likewise, venturing the opinion that Hezbollah, Hamas, and Islamic Jihad are neither collectively nor singly in favour of freedom of religion, freedom of speech, or tolerant of homosexuality, women's rights, or the separation of church and state, will get you immediately identified as a disgusting capitalist and nazi. Possibly even a religious fanatic. Or even a Jew. The horror, the horror.

OH MY BLEEDING PILES
A gentleman from Oakland by the name of Tristan Anderson got hit in the face with a tear-gas canister three days ago. This is not something which can be expected by normal people who mind their own business. One actually has to do several things for it to happen.
What Mr. Anderson (aka 'Cricket') did was join the International Solidarity Movement, travel to Israel, cross over into Palestinian territory, and take part in a rock-throwing protest in a closed military zone.
With all due respect for people of that ilk, there may be something about such behaviour which makes the old tear-gas canister in the face a little more likely. At least the chance is no longer one in a million.
Being on the same side as rock-throwing demonstrators, in a closed military zone, with the IDF on the other side? There are certain risks involved. Even if you do have the protection of an American passport and a liberal education.
[Mr. Tristan (Cricket) Anderson at one point gained fame for squatting in the branches of a tree on the UC Berkeley campus for twenty-one months. He may have gotten college credits for that endeavor.]
Mister Anderson is currently in hospital in Israel, receiving the best medical care possible (as has been communicated by several e-mailers from the anti-Israel side). Part of his brain had to be removed, and doctors have tried to repair some of the damage to his face. He may also lose an eye.

What Mr. Anderson (aka 'Cricket') did was join the International Solidarity Movement, travel to Israel, cross over into Palestinian territory, and take part in a rock-throwing protest in a closed military zone.
With all due respect for people of that ilk, there may be something about such behaviour which makes the old tear-gas canister in the face a little more likely. At least the chance is no longer one in a million.
Being on the same side as rock-throwing demonstrators, in a closed military zone, with the IDF on the other side? There are certain risks involved. Even if you do have the protection of an American passport and a liberal education.
[Mr. Tristan (Cricket) Anderson at one point gained fame for squatting in the branches of a tree on the UC Berkeley campus for twenty-one months. He may have gotten college credits for that endeavor.]
Mister Anderson is currently in hospital in Israel, receiving the best medical care possible (as has been communicated by several e-mailers from the anti-Israel side). Part of his brain had to be removed, and doctors have tried to repair some of the damage to his face. He may also lose an eye.

There are times when the internet gives me great joy. Often this is because I get to experience someone else's life vicariously, and equally often it is because a point of view that I had not theretofore considered is made crystal clear.

A group which inexplicably seems to have bamboozled their way into the warm fuzzy feelings of many people, despite their affectionate fondness for angry Muslims screaming Jew-hating slogans, or their joining with International ANSWER in advocating the ethnic cleansing of all of Israel from the river to the sea.

CATCHING JVP IN BED WITH THE BAD GUYS
Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) asserts that they have no bias and are merely in favour of a peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. And, like many in the peace-activist community, they claim that criticism of Israel is valid, and cannot possibly be anti-Semitic - being pro-Palestinian does not, in their statements, necessarily mean supporting the destruction of Israel.
In such a manner they have bamboozled concerned yet uninformed people into believing that they are a valid voice for peace, and not at all involved in anything that enables or empowers bigots, racists, and Israel-haters.
Sometimes, however, their kommisars show their true colours.

The Electronic Intifada unreservedly speaks in favour of several terrorist organizations, Israel-hater Joel Beinin's reputation is pungently rotten. It should be surprising to find Sydney Levy at the same table as the other two gentlemen.
Given his background, however, and his work in other fields, this blogger feels that it should have been entirely predictable.
Sydney Levy is instrumental in several anti-Israel campaigns, most notably divestment. On the other hand, he is also extremely active in immigrant rights campaigns and various other very worthwhile causes, and it is probable that he is sincerely humanistic in that context.
But regarding Israel, he is profoundly and terrifyingly ignorant, and biased.
As with many people, an activist role in one area flatters him into assuming an expertise and credibility in other areas that is entirely unwarranted.
The enslavement of liberalism in America to the hatreds and bigotries of the new anti-Semites starts with precisely such enablers and apologists.

ZIONIST CLAIMS, APARTHEID, AND OTHER TROPES
Recently an anonymous reader discovered a post I wrote a back in November, in which I defended Zionists and pro-Israeli activists on the Berkeley campus. As is widely known, the campus of the University of California at Berkeley is one of the most Jew-hating environments on the planet, coddling racists and bigots flying under "cause of the day" colours.
University officials, while aware of the problem, and happy to take money from donors on both the Jewish and Arab sides of the fence, gently close their eyes and pretend that all is well.

There were always Jews living there among the other people. The other people came in with conquerors over the centuries. Jews, however, have ALWAYS lived there. Furthermore, the Zionist purchased land - and developed the barren areas which they bought. It was the economic development of those lands that drew in even more people.
Also, the Jewish quarters of Jerusalem and Hebron, as well as other places inside the land, were ethnically cleansed by Arab mobs in the twenties and thirties - how do you justify Arabs even daring to claim those areas?
Why should Americans support an apartheid state
America does not support an Apartheid state - Israeli Arabs have the right to vote, to own property, and to participate at all levels in Israeli society. And there are Arabs in the ranks of most political parties and all ministries. There are also Arab parties in the Knesset. There are jobs and stations where having served in the IDF give you a much greater entry - Arabs are free to join the IDF. Druze Arabs and many Bedouin do serve in the military (and note that there are Knesset speakers, ministers, officers, and department heads from the Arab Israeli side). All who stayed in 1948 became citizens.
The distinction is with the population in the territories - who are not citizens, and do not wish to be citizens, of a praedominantly Jewish state. They have their own institutions, which are overwhelmingly Judenrein - this despite there having been Jewish populations in both the West Bank and Gaza (that latter population ethnically cleansed several times, the last time during the British period) which date back to the pre-Roman period. Obviously, a population which will not become citizens, and is not even desirous of that - which in fact is acknowledged by all sides as heading towards eventual statehood of its own - cannot be administered in the same way as citizens. They are administered under British Mandate codes and Ottoman law. As they were when the Jordanians ruled over them, and as they were after Egypt had seized Gaza. The laws in those areas are a confusing and oppressive welter, due to it being illegal to change them until locally valid representative bodies do so.

Like Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, and several others which have nationality laws based on racial and religious exclusionism, coupled with a large number of 'guest-workers' who are treated worse than animals?

Do you wish to talk about Mexican dishwashers and lettuce pickers? How about Turks who have been three generations in Northern Europe, and are still "foreigners"? Chinese and Indians in Malaysia who have been there for centuries and are discriminated against?

The comparison is obscene. After 1967, the Arab population in the territories more than tripled. Even in Gaza since the intifada, there has been a forty percent increase in the population, as per a news item on the BBC website which quotes UN figures. There are more Palestinians now than ever before. They have thrived most marvelously since 1948.
There are no death camps. There are no gas chambers. There are no torture rooms. The Arabs in the West Bank largely have their own officials to blame for the mess they are in (corruption nurtured and encouraged by the UN), and the Arabs in Gaza can thank Hamas (whose nickname, by the way, is SHIA - in snarky acknowledgement of the Iranian contribution) for their situation.

Not wishing to associate with a taboo minority is also a powerful motivator, as is profound subconscious hatred.

Now, I find it interesting that the word 'apartheid' is so often used by the anti-Israel crowd. Interesting, because it does not mean what they intend it to mean, nor what they wish to think it means.
Apartheid is a Dutch word that strictly speaking means 'separateness', and in the South African context referred to a legal separation within the same country into ethnic classes (based, in fact, on old Dutch-Roman law and the feudal concept of Romans, nobles, freemen, and serfs) - something which in so varied and diverse a country as Israel is patently absurd.
The West Bank, of course, is different; the Arabs wish their eventual state to be as Judenrein as possible, and have made abundantly clear that they wish Jews to keep out, but do not object to dogs or Persians.
As my regular readers know, I speak, read, and write Dutch fluently. I also understand a number of Dutch dialects, including Afrikaans. Do not presume to lecture me on what 'apartheid' means. Do not even think of doing so. It is a word in my language, not yours - you have merely hijacked it, and 'colonized' it - precisely like the Arabs did to the Christian lands in North Africa, the Levant, and Iberia, exactly like Muslims did to Asia Minor, Western India, Central Asia, and parts of Indonesia. If you use that word, you betray your ignorance, and your linguistic carpetbaggery.
Plus, in this case, you devalue that word to the point of irrelevance.

The comparison is obscene. After 1967, the Arab population in the territories more than tripled. Even in Gaza since the intifada, there has been a forty percent increase in the population, as per a news item on the BBC website which quotes UN figures. There are more Palestinians now than ever before. They have thrived most marvelously since 1948.
There are no death camps. There are no gas chambers. There are no torture rooms. The Arabs in the West Bank largely have their own officials to blame for the mess they are in (corruption nurtured and encouraged by the UN), and the Arabs in Gaza can thank Hamas (whose nickname, by the way, is SHIA - in snarky acknowledgement of the Iranian contribution) for their situation.

Ultraorthodox Jews (Neturei Karte) did not want Zionism to usurp the traditional rabbinic leadership of the Jews.

By the same token, many pro-Palestinian activists assert that they are not anti-Semites because their 'best friends' are Jewish (in other words, strictly anti-Zionist Jews). A more common tendency among them is to avoid Jews who they feel are too "Jewish", especially as regards the Israel and Palestine issues.
And, of course, there are still convinced anti-Semites in their ranks.
Not wishing to associate with a taboo minority is also a powerful motivator, as is profound subconscious hatred.

APARTHEID
Now, I find it interesting that the word 'apartheid' is so often used by the anti-Israel crowd. Interesting, because it does not mean what they intend it to mean, nor what they wish to think it means.
Apartheid is a Dutch word that strictly speaking means 'separateness', and in the South African context referred to a legal separation within the same country into ethnic classes (based, in fact, on old Dutch-Roman law and the feudal concept of Romans, nobles, freemen, and serfs) - something which in so varied and diverse a country as Israel is patently absurd.
The West Bank, of course, is different; the Arabs wish their eventual state to be as Judenrein as possible, and have made abundantly clear that they wish Jews to keep out, but do not object to dogs or Persians.
As my regular readers know, I speak, read, and write Dutch fluently. I also understand a number of Dutch dialects, including Afrikaans. Do not presume to lecture me on what 'apartheid' means. Do not even think of doing so. It is a word in my language, not yours - you have merely hijacked it, and 'colonized' it - precisely like the Arabs did to the Christian lands in North Africa, the Levant, and Iberia, exactly like Muslims did to Asia Minor, Western India, Central Asia, and parts of Indonesia. If you use that word, you betray your ignorance, and your linguistic carpetbaggery.
Plus, in this case, you devalue that word to the point of irrelevance.
As you are also doing by comparing the fairly minor Gaza war to the full-scale extermination of six million people over a five year period.

I cannot say that I particularly disagree. The Pakistani government, as usual, shows its complicity in terrorism and criminal enterprise. A more unreliable and treacherous bunch than the rulers of that ghastly failure of a state is hard to imagine.

Similar tendencies are also rife among faculty and administration of the university (as also elsewhere at other campuses (campi) in the UC system).
Unfortunately, the situation on the Berkeley campus is not likely to improve until faculty and administration acknowledge the gravity of the problem and commit themselves to rectifying it.
Given the institutional anti-Semitism pervasive throughout the University of California, that is likely to happen at approximately the same time as the over-freezing of hell.
Students with a strong Jewish sense of self should consider enrolling elsewhere until and unless the situation at Berkeley changes, and Jewish organizations and benefactors should be made aware that their continued support of an anti-Semitic campus ultimately works against their own interests.
The stigma of being labeled an anti-Semitic campus might prompt faculty and administrators towards some necessary corrective action - but I sincerely doubt it.

As an indication of the kind of people we are dealing with in the Bay Area - the people who have friends on the SF Board of Supervisors and among a number of the more influential political players in Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco - it may help to review the slogans which were on handmade signs at the anti-Israel demonstration organized by International ANSWER this past Saturday.

Despite having more security monitors in attendance than ever before (nearly one out of eight demonstrators wore the yellow vest assigned to monitors by International ANSWER), these signs were not removed.
Ergo, by the standards of International ANSWER, the sentiments expressed were both acceptable and justified.
In both intent and effect, International ANSWER endorses all these slogans, as do the other organizations which sponsored the demonstration, and the individual participants.

Also endorsing the anti-Semitism, I should add, was Cindy Sheehan, one of the fiery anti-Israel speakers trotted out by ANSWER.
Certainly so 'strong-minded' a woman as ms. Sheehan would have had the gumption to insist that the message of the demonstration NOT be one of hatred, bigotry, and blatant anti-Semitism.......
Unless she supported precisely that.

Counter Protest International ANSWER's Anti-Israel Demonstration
This Saturday January 10
San Francisco at the Civic Center Plaza (we will gather on Polk between Larkin and McAllister Sts, directly in front of City Hall).
Meet at 11:00 AM
Once again, the streets of the Bay Area are filled with hate when Israel defends itself. International ANSWER and other anti-Israel groups in the area are claiming Israel's actions in Gaza are "genocide" . Groups protesting against Israel last week chanted "Itbach al Yahud" (slaughter the Jews) and "Falastin balad'na w'al Yahud qalab'na" (Palestine is our land and the Jews are our dogs), clear anti-Semitic hate speech.
The groups sponsoring these demonstrations demonize Israel, endorse Israel's destruction, and justify the terrorist acts against Israel that caused the current situation. In particular, International ANSWER is the group that forced its own racist, anti-Semitic propaganda on those who wanted to march just to oppose the war in Iraq. While SF Voice for Israel takes no position on the Iraq war, we oppose ANSWER's manipulation of the antiwar movement and its demonization of Israel. Previous ANSWER demonstrations have been notable for vicious anti-Israel, anti-Semitic and pro-terror signs, speakers and chants.
San Francisco Voice for Israel/Stand With Us will stand against the anti-Israel/pro-terrorism voices. Our presence at these events has proven highly effective at countering their message and making sure that the anti-Israel activists can not push their propaganda on the public unopposed! In addition, when the local media cover these demonstrations, they always film our presence so that the public can see that supporters of Israel are willing to stand up for the truth. (Those of you who were there with us last week even had your presence noted on
CNN!).
We know that many in our community will be unable to join us because this is on Shabbat. While we will never schedule our own events on Shabbat, we are standing up against the anti-Israel hate groups that usually schedule their protests for Saturdays, specifically to try to minimize the Jewish community response.
We will meet at 11 AM and stay until ANSWER leaves Civic Center Plaza to march through the streets. We do not encourage anyone to march near them in counterprotest once they leave the Civic Center area, as we cannot assure adequate police protection should elements in their rally decide to start a rampage.
Please bring your noisemakers, flags, and signs, AND please wear BLUE and WHITE. As always, feel free to make your own signs but please no signs or graphics offensive to any racial or ethnic group including but not limited to Arabs, Islam, or Palestinians in general. Signs in violation of our policies will not be allowed.

The anti-Israel demonstration which we will be counterprotesting is sponsored by the usual organizations: The ANSWER Coalition, Free Palestine Alliance, Muslim American Society Freedom Foundation, National Council of Arab Americans and Al-Awda-International Palestine Right to Return Coalition.
All of them seek the destruction of the United States and Israel. The first one listed (ANSWER) is the largest anti-Semitic hate-group in California.
Please also note that Bay Area Women in Black (BAWIB), Queers Undermining Isreali Terror (QUIT), and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) have repeatedly endorsed the anti-American, anti-Semitic, and anti-Israel messages of the sponsors listed above, as well as stood in solidarity during speeches in favour of various terrorist groups, and while racist slogans (such as 'itbach al Yahud') where chanted.
It is time to call them to account for their support of bigotry and hate.
