WHAT IS IT?

A phrase in a crime report on a news site caught my eye: "violence against Asians in the Bay Area has continued relatively unabated". While I am clearly not of Asian ancestry or heritage myself, this pisses me off. My apartment mate is Asian. My downstairs neighbor and most other people in this building are Asian. Many of the other people in this neighborhood are Asian. The shops where I buy food are Asian, the bakeries where delicious pastries can be found, most of the staff at nearby Walgreens, busdrivers, and, I really must stress this, the staff at the clinic which is the homebase for my regular care physician as well. So while I have no skin in the game (forgive the double entendre), I do have a major stake in the race.

In other news, SF City Attorney Chesa Boudin apparently plans to act as prosecutor in the case of the nutball who attacked two elderly Asian women waiting for a bus recently (a man who had had previous run-ins with the law and should never have been released) and seeing as Chesa Boudin's trial experience is pretty much zipp-diddly, it is likely that the perpetrator will get off, perhaps with a wrist slap or a handshake.

Late the other night while I was outside having a smoke, an aged gentleman slowly ambled up the street. He visibly tensed up as he got closer, so I greeted him and uttered some comments about the weather in Cantonese. A while later a woman walked up the street, avoiding the sidewalks and keeping her distance from shadows where non-Asians might be lurking.

By the way: a large number of attacks on Asians are categorized as "non-racially motivated". Which is, in many cases, clearly bullshit.

Anti-Asian racialism is a deep-seated part of the Bay Area.

Especially among white or black people and Hispanics.
