Now is the time to be especially wary of wildlife. Nature is waking up, the season of fertility and new life has arrived, and some creatures are grumpy without their coffee. Especially bunny rabbits. Easter is coming.
Admittedly, it's their one time of the year to shine.
But do the little children appreciate it?
No, the little brutes don't.
One of these years the rabbits may finally go balistic. Long knives, slashed ankles.
Small human beings writhing on the green green grass.
Here's your damn' egg, asshole.
Just a few more days, bitches.
A few more days.

CHAG HA CHOCOLATE BUNNIES
Never really thought about it, but Easter is the most significant event on the Christian calendar. Which today is. For people like me it always meant disappointment that the chocolate bunnies were hollow, and just not very good. How can we be happy that someone in whom we don't believe has risen if the candy is so mediocre? As an adult, of course, I am not so candy focused; it's a good day for some roast lamb, or duck.
Neither of which I will have today.
For over seven years my Easter has meant an extra day off, for which I did not get paid. And no celebratory meats or chocolate. And, seeing as I live in San Francisco where we're all godless atheists and heathen heretics thank heavens, a simple meal in Chinatown or Little Saigon followed by a pipe.
The only question which tobacco celebrates the return of spring.
No, I shall not smoke "Bob's Chocolate Flake", by Samuel Gawith. Some folks cannot stand the chocolate odeur which adheres, others do not even notice it. And once you rub it out and let it air a bit, the topping is barely noticeable if even. It's decent tobacco. But hardly chocolaty.
In any case, at six forty six in the morning, the most religious thing one can do is light up a short Romeo y Julieta and go wander around the block for while, seeing if the bums are up yet. They aren't.
The old lady across the street is. So are a few of the other resident elderly.
Good morning. And there's a man patiently waiting for the bus uphill.
Plus a lone jogger. Crows. Seagulls.
A pigeon or two.
[And the old Cantonese auntie with the gay pistachio ice cream hued hat, whose morning exercise is to walk halfway down the block with her shopping bag, turn around, and walk back up. Several times. It almost looks like she's happily skipping, despite stiff joints.]
The weather is warmer than it had been. Bathrobe and jammies are now enough covering outside. And while tempted to not bother changing into regular clothes today, I shall nevertheless at some point shave, shower, and get dressed. Because out of respect for the demise of chocolate bunnies it would only be proper to do so. I pity the poor crappy-tasting chocolate bunnies. Life is so short, and at the end, disappointing.
The first thing to go are your ears.
Then your legs.
Sad.
No, there is no metaphor. Or if there is, it is laboured and not worth noting.
But one cannot walk for several blocks in one's bathrobe smoking a pipe by mid-morning. It's just not done. Even if the bathrobe is dull grey and somewhat stained from spilled coffee. Or smells funky.
On Easter, one must rise, and act human again.
We celebrate with good tobacco.
And a bad attitude.
I lament the bunnies.
Chag: a celebration, a festival day.
Chag ha: the celebration of sthg.
Chocolate bunnies: sacrifice.

RUSSIAN WORDS OF COMFORT
The flu nixed my plans for Easter. Day off, spot of light laundry, then down to Chinatown for a late breakfast and a smoke. No. Got up early, felt thoroughly miserable, went back to bed. Slept over seven hours since this morning. No energy, aches and chills. Finally fixed myself a light snack, because a man has to eat. Asparagus and egg toast.
Whenever I visited my spam folder, it was filled. Dumped over three hundred obvious spam comments. For which I am blaming the Russians, of course. Though why they would want to subvert this blog site is a mystery.
There is no Lesby scat here.
No Czarist secret agenda.
No Wordpress or plug-ins.
No, there is no twitter feed.
No Chelten-buggery-ham.
But someone wants there to be, and is stepping up to offer it.
I feel like death warmed over, didn't enjoy my extra day off at all, and some Slavic turdbot wants to seed my site with scatology and Cheltenham.
Go away, Igor.

A DIET RICH IN ANIMAL PROTEIN
His psychoanalyst once said that he was a bit of an idiot. Unprofessional, of course, but a fairly accurate assessment. As others would have agreed. Until well into his adult years he had believed that his mother was a virgin. In his defense, she had been unmarried at the time, and somehow he hadn't connected any of the dots. But she was, after all, a rabbit.
Rabbits usually ignore social niceties like matrimony, divorce, and the whole dating or adultery scene.
He couldn't explain the egg thing either. Doctor Schmidt theorized that the compulsion to hide eggs was tied to his peculiar sexuality, and that painting them in startling colours was subconsciously an attempt to be found out.
But for two thousand years he hid the eggs.
And remained totally celibate.
Which, for rabbits, is unnatural. Of course, painting eggs is too. But he loved eggs. So elegant, so perfectly shaped, so ... ovoid. Say it slowly: "ooh void". Derived from 'ova', 'ovum'. Oh-voooooom! It even made the mouth egg-shaped when you voiced it.
During more than twenty centuries he had been on a crusade to convince the world of egg-perfection. Nature's most perfect food. Not only aesthetically pleasing, also delicious.
For most of that time no one had known about cholesterol. A minor matter, he was sure, but the medical profession had blown it all out of proportion.
Doctor Schmidt said that the eggs symbolized penises, but how very like a psychoanalyst to see reproductive organs in everything!
Schmidt clearly had problems himself.
For over fifty years he and Schmidt had fought twice a week, in the office and elsewhere. They were almost like an old married couple.
Perhaps some of the immortality had rubbed of.
But he looked ancient and leathery.
Schmidt's mother had, ages ago, angrily demanded that her son should stop seeing that boring neurotic rabbit. But she was dead now, and every week her son still had dinner with his bunny. Eggs. Omelets. Deviled. Scrambled. Curried. Snippets over a plate of asparagus.
Gehakte eier salat. Fried. Egg-bacon sandwich.
Sliced with herring and beets. Plain with a dab of mayonnaise.
Gently poached. Quiche. Shakshouka.

CHOCOLATE RABBITS ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD
While researching Vegan spiral cut ham, possibly for this year's Easter Charity Dinner of the Firm Health Orphanage -- the 2016 event was less than well-attended, perhaps because the celebratory meal featured "a festive vegetarian bean smorgasbord" -- one item among my previous essays caught my eye. Beans, by the way, are not celebratory.
"I would far rather see a naughty nursy-wursy in the hallway mirror, holding a freshly baked apple pie. The naked man who pops up occasionally is not really my type."
At that point I realized that all the best pastry crusts for pies are made with lard. Clarified shortening. Hog fat. And it also brought my dislike of food fads, gluten-phobes, vegans, kale-snarfers, and all others of the dreadful puritanical Protestant social type into sharp focus.
Other people with whom I would, on the whole, rather not have to associate include people who voted for Stein, Trump, Johnson, and also many of the Bernie supporters whose vociferation helped sabotage the election. Berkeleyites, Marinites, Southern Californians. Anti-vaxxers, health food freaks, and the dingoes who believe celebrities.
When you think about it, a nurse holding a hot apple pie is a remarkably wholesome and cheering concept. Fresh, clean, alluring.
If I ever decide to celebrate anything Easter-ish in a family context, with cheap chockies and screaming little kids running around, I will make sure that there is at least one nurse making pies in the kitchen.
Gender somewhat irrelevant.
I still remember my keen disappointment at chocolate bunnies. That horrid smell, the disturbing lack of realistic details (as if designed by someone who just didn't care), and the fact that it was hollow with thin brittle walls.
It made a mockery of my childish conceptual delight. And it tasted fake.

KEEP EGGS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS!
As a public service, here is important news for this weekend.
I felt that there were things you needed to know.
Saturday April 15, 10:00 AM
NEWS FLASH: In a move to pacify angry Californians, the Governor's Office has announced that the yearly Easter Egg Hunt on the grounds of the State Capitol will be replaced with a 'carrot quest', in an effort to provide "our state's children" with a heart-healthy snack that does not connote any exploitation of animals and contains no artificial colorants. The traditional chocolate candy will no longer be made available either.
Instead, quinoa roll-ups are suggested.
The Press Release clarified that anyone attempting to distribute "candy" to minors will be arrested and charged with child-endangerment. Also, there is a "safe zone" extending up to seven miles from the Capitol Grounds where tobacco, alcohol, gluten, pornography, and a comprehensive list of triggering behaviours, statements, words, and attitudes will NOT be allowed without an official permit (or government I.D.).
Medicinal herb-use excepted.
Saturday, April 15, 3:00 PM
NEWS FLASH: The Sacramento Police Department has issued a lookout for a person known as the "Bunny Bandit", suspected of pelting motorists near where the 'Governor's Annual Carrot Quest' will take place tomorrow with hard-boiled eggs. The eggs are painted in a variety of hues to disguise them, such as Red Number 40, Yellow Number 5, and Venetian Ceruse. The public is cautioned to stay away from any offending albumen.
He (or she) is dressed in a fluffy pink velour body suit.
The suspect's gender-identity is unknown.
And considered immaterial.
Extra security will be provided for Sunday's "Healthstravaganza".
Saturday, April 15, 5:42 PM
NEWS FLASH: In a response to months of activism by concerned citizens from all backgrounds, mainly Berkeley, officials have recommended that matze-brei be classified as a health hazard, due to the inclusion of gluten and what has been called "a shocking amount of heart-unhealthy butter", in addition to other dairy material, sweeteners, and processed food products.
"It's a splendid example of social responsibility" said spokesperson Priscilla ('Prissie') Codswallop, "the first step of many towards a better future".
She also announced that their next target is the avocado.
An inedible genetically modified fake fruit.
"It looks unnatural, like an egg."
Saturday, April 15, 9:36 PM
NEWS FLASH: Crowds of intoxicated fans are currently engaged in a food fight in Sleep Train Arena, having smuggled so-called "Easter Eggs" into the stadium in defiance of tight security. In a related matter, Capitol Police have recommended cavity searches of all attendees for future events. Beer sales were halted ten minutes ago and the bathrooms locked; it is hoped that this will eventually persuade the mob to leave.
Sunday, April 16, 11:42 AM
NEWS FLASH: The Governor's Annual Carrot Quest descended into chaos and mayhem today as crowds of obese youngsters fought desperately with invasive rabbits intent upon the vegetable prizes. The slow moving children were no match for the agile and aggressive leporids, whose vicious bites and powerful hind claws disemboweled a number of infants. Mothers were seen fleeing from the grounds wailing "oh the humanity" and demanding conflict resolution. They were consoled by a statement from a Buddhist Abbot offering words of peace and love.
Sunday, April 16, 4:23 PM
NEWS FLASH: The rabbit swarm in Sacramento has developed a taste for human flesh, and is heading towards the suburbs.
Save yourselves.

BEST EASTER EVER
The Easter Bunny lay among the scraps of foil from all the chocolate eggs and placidly burped. This had turned out to be a fine day after all, even though it had started off impossibly grim.
Early in the morning there had been those phone calls threatening to block his funding if he gave Easter Candy to welfare recipients in several American states where the Republicans wanted to punish poor people.
He had first tried to patiently explain that A) he was not part of any Federal food program that their congressional representatives voted on, and B) they should all hush up because their states took far more money from the Federal government than they had contributed in any case.
What with being a bunch of parasitical hosebags.
Then also, his role in the days events was purely secular, couldn't they understand that? He operated entirely without any sort of church sanction, and could not care less what their fundie scum voters thought.
He didn't answer to any religion, so bugger them.
And their hatchet-faced preachers.
Then he simply hung up.
While he distributed chocolate eggs back east, angry food activists and assorted harridans tried to lynch him for distributing sugar and non-green-sourced cocoa, how dare he try to poison them?!?!?
"We demand kale and carrots, insensitive rodent!"
He skipped Kentucky and North Carolina entirely, seeing as those were barbaric and repressive places, populated by zealots and gun nuts likely to shoot at him, and many of them were short on teeth anyway.
Overweight Christian neanderthals don't need candy.
In California, first the Vegans attacked him because eggs are a symbol of oppression, and a bunny distributing such horrid things is just a collaborator, a veritable Uncle Tom. Filthy capitalist!
Then potheads tried to steal all the candy.
Finally, a street person in San Francisco screamed at him because his chocolate eggs were not certified organic, gluten-free, non-gmo, fair trade low fat small-batch artisanal soymilk and hazelnut.
After sexually propositioning him.
"Hey furball, are those made in China?!?"
And at that point, he said "oh f*ck it", and went home.
For the first time in his life, he gorged on chocolate.
No point in leaving ANY for the little turds, anyway, as their insufferable parents seemed determined to spoil the holiday with unrealistic demands and ideas, and their constant whiny, kvetchy, bellyaching, insufferable, petulant, stuck-up, and altogether nauseating and infuriating "my kids are SPECIAL" attitudes.
Sure they are, bitch, they're troll-like no-neck monsters.
Next year, those nasty little brats are getting cigars.
Easter is about sticking things in your mouth.
He lazily stretched out a paw and grabbed another malted milk ball. Hmmm, why had he never thought of eating all the chocolate himself before? This was great. And there was still plenty left.
He still had bunny ears to bite off.

SLAVE BUNNIES AND EGG-LAYING GRANDMAS
After a long and surreal day, I couldn't get otters out of my mind during the entire trip back to the city. What if, for instance, Easter was about otters? And fish; otters love fish.
Wouldn't that be a whole lot better than a flying magic zombie coming back to tell you it's okay to eat pork?
Or the vampire bunny?
And what if Easter dinner had nothing to do with eggs, lamb, or the classic wine-braised rabbit, but instead meant that you got to take an entire family of otters to a restaurant for some lovely steamed fish. And stir-fried eels with black bean sauce. Ginger and scallion oysters.
And garlicky whole cooked crabs.
They would sit around the table expectantly, as their sensitive noses could smell what was going on in the kitchen. A few of the adults would experiment a bit with the chopsticks, and look almighty relieved when you told them that it would be okay to use paws. The younger otters would be totally unconcerned, they had NO intention of using utensils of any kind.
Oh boy! Crustacean! Jaws and teeth!
The tiniest one would probably be standing on her stack of phone books waving at the little girl at the next table over, because she looks so cute in her frilly pink dress.
The only tool really necessary would be a shell cracker, because one cannot sit around a table in public gnawing loudly.
Or whacking at shells with stones.
As the host human you would be responsible for interacting with the restaurant staff. Placing the order and such. Remember to suggest that the best thing to drink with seafood is weak tea, NO softdrinks.
Otters are naturally already hyper-active.
No need to wire them further.
They're vibrating!
All rational people would rather spend Easter-Sunday with charming and funny otters, perhaps playing patty-cake or rock-scissors-stone in between courses, than visiting the grim elderly relatives and trying to find a bunch of damned eggs in the grass among the bugs and worms after listening to a preacher curse them for being irreligious and marrying outside the faith. Especially THOSE people. Gadzooks.
That story about a magic flying zombie?
Nah, not really believable.
Egg-laying bunny?
Hoo-hah!
Go on. Treat the otters. Be a mensh.
If you are disturbed by this post, and indignantly judge it to be sacrilegious and in extremely bad taste, why, more than sufficient reason for your vengeful deity to strike me down with a bolt of lightening, feel free to pray that such divine vengeance happen forthwith.
Forthwith!
My powerful otters will protect me.
Those coloured eggs will rot.
Bunny gonna get you.

THE PERFECT EASTER PARTY
Easter is more than just another pagan spring festival, it celebrates the resurrection of the Christmas ham.
Plus something... bunnies... eggs.
A buffet with these three items requires condiments.
Fun additional flavours to aid digestion.
Very many condiments.
Mayonnaise: all three foods above benefit from mayo.
Mustard: hot stone-ground and sweet Hawaiian.
Mango chutney: good with both eggs and ham.
Béchamel: festive, combines harmoniously with everything.
Taco Bell Bold & Creamy Spicy Ranchero: devilled egg sandwiches.
Worcestershire Sauce: make the British feel at home.
Horseradish: especially if the ham is watery.
Tabasco: the all-American condiment.
Sriracha Hotsauce: the better than all-American condiment.
Dave's Insanity Sauce: resurrection medicine.
Acceptable shortcut for all of the above: Remoulade.
Acceptable? Heck, so much more than.
Actually, on second thought, the best food for Easter breakfast is probably pizza. No muss, no fuss, no bother, just call your order in to the twenty four hour pie shop approximately twenty minutes before everyone else gets up.
Nothing says a life well re-lived than anchovy and extra garlic.
Potent juju; it keeps away zombies.
That's a bonus.
Pizza ALSO goes well with condiments.
See the complete list above.
Allow for seconds.

THEIR RED RED EYES
[Easter morning, March 31, 2013, right after the first cup of coffee.]
He was always terrified of this day. Probably performance anxiety, nothing more. But still, he worried. Some of those upright creatures were entirely uncontrollable, and you never knew what the big clumsy galoots might do.
Such a horrible gig. If he had known it would be this bad, he would not in a million years have agreed to it. But it had seemed like such a deal at the time!
A few publicity shots, an appearance or two at a charity event, one major show every year, just one day of work, and eternal life!
What rabbit could say 'no' to that?
Oh, and colouring things that came out of chicken bottoms. He always farmed that out to the weasels and stoats, as they were adept at such tasks, and full of energy. Plus they also liked blood, the evil little carnivores.
Once he found that source of cheap labour, he ignored the eggs.
It was the blood that was slightly disconcerting.
Rabbits are vegetarians, usually.
But vampires aren't.
He supposed he was the only immortal rabbit on the planet. He had been tempted in the early years -- centuries -- to bring someone else over, but whenever he thought he'd found a likely candidate, they always turned out to be harebrained. And even the most anti-social of rabbits always has enormous numbers of relatives, so it would be impossible to do just one; the entire family would be in on it, and demand the same.
Imagine several thousand vampire bunnies!
No, that would be quite impossible.
Constant twitching.
Red eyes.
That really would be his worst nightmare. And they'd probably never shut up, but talk incessantly about carrots!
He had no desire whatsoever to spend all the centuries listening to immortal rabbits whining about no longer eating the fresh green grass, the crunchy orange things, crisp CRISP lettuce leaves........
So instead, once in a blue moon, he'd bring over a ferret or two. They were loads of fun, being small and wrigglesome, and they would eventually forget about sunlight. He enjoyed watching from a dark burrow as they dashed out into the brightness and exploded. Larger animals, like sheep, smoldered and ran around panicking while the sunlight gradually killed them, but ferrets (and field mice) were small enough that their entire bodies caught fire immediately and they disappeared in a beautiful puff of smoke.
Once or twice he'd brought over a human.
Not very often, because children were emotionally off kilter, and it was unpredictable what they would do with 'the gift'. There had been that freaky French girl who went bonkers, starting riots all over Lorraine and Orleans, nearly undermining the legitimate government at the time. That had created all kinds of problems! She'd even been called a witch, and accused of a deal with the devil. Finally she too self-immolated, and the French had invented one hell of a story just to account for that!
Then they spent the next several hundred years pissing at the English.
What was her name again? Jeannie? Joan? Joan something.
He could not remember, it had been so long ago.
Fourteen hundreds - nearly six centuries!
Thousands of rabbit life times.
Occasionally the Greek fellow checked up on him, to see how he was doing. Nearly two thousand years ago he had met the undead magician, who had told him a fantastic tale about escaping from a sealed cave.
It was supposed to be his greatest illusion, but the ignorant bumpkins had gone wild. Whenever he appeared after that, instead of letting him do his act -- water into wine, segue into loaves, fishes, and leprosy, and gradually build up to a grand finale -- they'd demand something bigger and better, right now! The eggs had originally been an ironic comment, but even that spiralled out of control.
The Greek had suggested that if he got tired, he could always appoint a substitute. Turn some other creature into a blood-sucking immortal with candy.
He'd thought about it. A large vampire grizzly bear, storming through the night throwing eggs and scaring the bejayzus out of everyone.
As well as draining several kiddies dry.
With strap-on rabbit ears.
For verisimilitude.
Even bears look cute with floppy strap-on ears.
For some reason he was also thinking fishnets and a giant cotton ball, but there probably wasn't a bear alive that would do that, though. They didn't really have a sense of humour.
Oh well. It was dark. Time to start distributing painted eggs and chocolate.
For the first several million tykes he went down chimneys and dropped a basket near the fireplace. By the end of the night he was tired, and simply wanted to get it all over with. He'd chuck loot at random, and those kids would have to search in the shrubbery around the house. Sometimes even in the garbage dump or on the freeway. Let them struggle for the lousy sweets!
The very last child on the list probably wouldn't get any at all.
Or maybe just stale Hersheys with the ears bitten off.
Sorry, kid. It's late, and I might burn up.
Gotta get back before daylight.
Crap I need a cocktail.
Eggs smell bad.
Worse than blood.
He was sick of them.
Yeah.
Happy Easter.

DON'T OFFEND THE RABBIT!
For some reason I myself don't understand, I went to have a caffeinated beverage at the Caffe Trieste in North Beach. And I'm glad I did.
Years ago I would go there nearly every day for a latte in the morning, because it was conveniently close and they really are the only place in San Francisco that can make a latte -- not entirely sure what all those other places do, but calling a mildly flavoured wussy warmed milk drink a latte does not make it so -- however I rarely visit the Trieste nowadays.
No, I still like the place. It's the customers that I object to.
I just don't have much tolerance for "artistic" types.
North Beach still has far too many of those.
It's a Bermuda Triangle of attitudes.
There were three other people sitting near me, two of whom were deep in conversation. The third was happily relating to her bunny rabbit, and studiously ignoring the adults.
Precisely that made me notice them. Cute little girl, big blue rabbit.
You don't often see a bunny rabbit wearing a ballerina dress.
"It's that place that used to do pies on Washington, you know, Sun Wah Kue. They do noodles now"
My ears perked up. The restaurant the woman mentioned happens to be a favourite lunch spot of mine - San Sun Restaurant. What had been there for many years was an old-time Chinatown standard that many people still remember.
Sun Wah Kue (新華僑餐廳) was famous for their orange pie, as well as fried chicken and daily lunchcounter-type specials. Their apple pie was probably the best in the city. You could sit there for hours drinking coffee and reading the newspapers on a wet day. Heaven.
Unfortunately they closed down a long time ago.
San Sun (三陽咖啡餐屋) moved into that location last year. They have an extensive menu, but what they do best is phở.
"Robert LIKES noodles!"
That was the little girl's first contribution to the conversation. The man looked startled, and said "her name is Robert? What kind of stupid name is that for a girl?!?"
It was probably the ballerina dress that confused him. Boys rarely wear those.
The little girl indignantly replied "Robert is a MAN!"
"Why is he wearing those clothes then?"
"They're nice!"
"Hah, he looks silly."
"NO HE DOESN'T!!!"
"Whatever."
The man and the woman continued their discussion, and the little girl again gave her full attention to her bunny. I could hear her murmuring, and even though I wasn't trying to listen in, I distinctly heard her extracting a promise from Robert that uncle George would NEVER get noodles again. Ever!
Especially not on Easter!
At this point I was fascinated. The idea that there is a big blue rabbit (in a ballerina dress) who goes around gifting noodles on Easter is enchanting.
Who wouldn't want festive pasta instead of eggs?
Boiled eggs, feh!
I was beginning to feel sorry for uncle George, who wasn't going to get anything at a time when everyone else would be enjoying their noodles.
Sometimes you just have to stare off into space while dawdling immensely over your hot beverage. Pretend like you aren't even aware of what's going on around you. Like a little girl assuring her bunny rabbit (Robert) that uncle George was, in all ways, a real "dick head".
"Melanie! Don't say such things!"
"It wasn't me, it was Robert!"
"One of these days I'm going to wash his mouth out with soap!"
"No noodles for you!"
The woman was completely nonplussed. Clearly she didn't know that her daughter's stuffed animal went around giving everyone noodles at Eastertime.
How ignorant can you get? I mean really!
After extracting a commitment from Melanie to NOT say THAT word again, even if she was 'quoting Robert', a very bad bunny by the way, she returned her attention to the man identified as 'uncle George'.
Who was still quite unaware that he wouldn't get noodles.
Probably because he's a dick head.
On the other hand, I'm looking forward to Easter.
I like noodles.

INFESTATION OF RABBITS
Really, I should’ve remembered – I live in a city with piles of young twenty-something party-wasps. Just sheer bucket loads of self-indulgent borderline alcoholic white people from elsewhere.
Should I stress that they are “entitled”? Or is that clear already?
The less said about “doing shots” and “make me something with Blue Berry Vodka” the better. There is no doubt but that some of them technicoloured significantly before midnight.
Yes, I am glad I’m not in the bar-back’s shoes – and I hope for his sake that his footwear is less leaky than mine. Those bathrooms must have been a right sight by closing.
It is unlikely that those people tipped well-enough to make it worthwhile.
Their presence was far less rewarding than they may have thought.
BUNNY-CON
After Santa-con and Leprechaun-con, comes Easter. And a bunch of single desperate “let’s get drunk and hump” young college grads of the “we’re white and wonderful” type decided to put on bunny ears, poofy tails, and git down in my neighborhood.
Boruch Hashem that rabbits cannot hop uphill far enough to pee or puke in my doorway. It was bad enough that several dozen of them flooded the bar where I was quietly having a drink.
I had hoped, just hoped, that things wouldn’t get out of hand – they usually veer close to doing so on Saturday night – but my hopes were cruelly dashed.
Nay, my hopes were slashed open, guts ripped out, obscene things done with penile implements. Then spat open, the bloody cadavers held up to ridicule and flying tomatoes, and finally dismembered by a mob of howling savages!
Alas, I weep over your brutalized corpses, my hopes.
The most grievous offense was the blonde screaming. Party blonde. Very very self-impressed party-blonde.
THREE OF THEM! High-pitched, piercing, screechy, and utterly moronic.
Bad enough that they used the phrase OMG as punctuation – it is better than the 'F' word, I suppose – but did they HAVE to sing along with Sir Mixalot and his fetish for big black bottoms? The Oakland Booty song is NOT a musical number that should be yelled out by anybody, let alone a large group of entirely white young adults who would sully their knickers if they met a black rapper. And his big-bottied hos.
In a crime-ridden neighborhood of Oakland. At night.
Jeesh!
The three women right next to me yelled their vacant little blonde lungs out.
I would’ve vastly preferred it if they had gone up to the stage and joined the happy rutting frenzy there. But nope, they wanted to partake of mob hormonal release from a distance.
The entire length of the bar, yet. I always sit as far away from the stage as possible, just to get away from misbehavior.
Last night, it did not help.
Go on girls, flock up there. Go flock with the other vulgarians on stage.
Seriously, ya'll need to get flocked.
I watched the bar-manager facing the crowd. Underneath that calm, composed, and smiling exterior, I could tell that he wished he were back in Africa as a mercenary. None of these idiots would’ve survived.
Bogey at eleven o’clock! Kablam! Ratatat!
I can’t believe that Hugh Heffner surrounds himself with these creatures.
That tells you something.
I didn't stay very long.

WHAT TO DO WITH THOSE HORRIBLE THINGS
Every year around Easter (a holiday of unknown origin) a confection known as 'peeps' is distributed in huge quantities in the United States. It's a weird subcultural phenomenon - one which is not common in my subculture, but is nevertheless de rigueur among the well-bred treiler-treif, bless them.
Peeps are little spongy sugar-poof birds (marshmallows), usually coloured yellow, but also available in shocking pink and blue. They are edible, and they are not addicting - which begs the question why enough of them are produced every year to give a medium-size third-world country diabetes.
You probably have a large jute bag of them behind the kitchen door right now, don't you? Entirely aside from the inexplicable circumstances of your acquiring them, which is baffling in the extreme, you're probably still wondering what to do with all of them.
Especially before Mother's Day - you don't want to explain that frat-boy party to your mom when she visits. She already wonders what went wrong and why aren't you married to that sweet girl from Touro College.
She does not need to know about your.... Perversions.
BLUE PEEP PIE
1 cookie crumb pie crust.
1 large box (four servings) blue Jell-O.
1 cup hot water.
1 cup half-and-half.
3 cups chilled Coolwhip.
2 tablespoons Curacao.
16 blue Peeps.
1 cup canned blueberries.
Chill crust while preparing the filling. Pour hot water over Jell-O in a Pyrex bowl, and stir to dissolve. Add the half-and-half and Curacao. Blend well and refrigerate until mixture has thickened to a stiff cream consistency.
Fold Coolwhip into Jell-O. Mix well till no longer streaky, but no further than that. Spoon filling into chilled crust. Separate the peeps (they come attached) and arrange around the edge of the pie. Mound the canned blueberries in the center and smoosh flat. Chill for a few hours before serving.
------------------------------------
PS.I: Thanks are due my research assistant, the super boffo engineering dude, without whom I never would have discovered this epicurean treat.
PS.II: You could also perform scientific experiments on the peeps, like burning, dissolving in acid, launching with bottle-rockets, Tisha B'Av bondfiring, microwaving, melting onto hot concrete, rubber-band bondaging, flattening with various implements, or using them for target practice with an air-gun or a Glock semi-automatic. According to the super boffo engineering dude, this is traditional too.
NOTE I: Birds and raccoons will not touch peeps. That should tell you something.
NOTE II: This seemed like a good idea at the time. I have no idea why I thought so now.
