San Francisco is a pit too but one does need to venture forth from their respective neighborhoods to see the urban decay and its rippling effects on the city at large. A few hoods have retained their character over time, like Chinatown, the Mission (for as long as I can remember, it’s always been the way it is now, but its restaurants/bars, IMO, are worth venturing there), and one of my favorites, the Inner Richmond. There are others I am sure but like many former and current San Franciscans, I am biased and tend to only visit the areas I know or like best.
However, the TL is just awful and the crime from that pit has spilled over into nicer areas. Marina residents in 2021 found themselves impacted by homeless criminals so much that they hired private security to patrol. The same wealthy white democrats who support poor city leadership found themselves the recipients of bad urban policy. Oops.
