WHEN AT HOME

It wasn't hard to guess, given clues and context. 芦笋 must mean asparagus. Better known as 蘆筍 ('lou suen'). For those of us who haven't been educated on the mainland the simplification is somewhat dense.

They've got new offerings written on the wall.

鹹蝦蒸五花肉
凉瓜排骨飯

Simple stuff, Canto home cooking, for people who don't want anything too complicated, but do want to eat well. Ginger scallion lamb slices rice, salt fish steamed pork patty rice, asparagus beef rice, lotus leaf steamed chicken, stinky shrimp sauce steamed streaky pork, and bitter melon spare ribs rice. Plus a number of other things. But these caught my eye.


What I ended up ordering was 豆腐茄子雞飯 ('dau fu ke ji kai faan'); tofu and eggplant with chicken over rice. Which was excellent.

Home style is quite fine as far as I'm concerned. Good food. It's probably not something that the tourists would like, given that they've never actually had it, and would not order such unknown and unfulsomely praised simple dishes. And without spring rolls either.
I've never had "shrimp with lobster sauce" (蝦龍糊), by the way.
Minus the addition of egg, that's just ginger scallion.
薑蔥 ('geung chung'), And perhaps garlic.
That, yes.

Cantonese home cooking. With a bowl of 老火湯。 Old fire soup. Broth and pot herbs.
Plus white rice.

Spring rolls (春卷 'chun kuen')

I believe they also do spring rolls. I haven't ever asked.
They're ubiquitous in the Caucasian world.
Naturally I've had them.

In fact there's nothing wrong with such things.
Perfect for the office Christmas party.
Or the July 4th picnic.
