EAT LIKE AN AMERICAN

I am baffled by the white people I work with. This despite being glow-in-the-dark myself. Some people are just more whity-white. So pale they come from Kansas. And fearfully clutch their little dog Toto in panic at anything remotely diverse.


Such as the things that other people eat.


A long time ago, one of my co-workers, despite being of Italian ancestry, claimed that anything except beef and potatoes gave her heart-burn that lasted for days. Consequently she avoided pizza and pasta dishes, savoury stews, Chinese food, and pretty much anything that had more flavour than cardboard.

She was very sensitive.

I took particular joy in steering departmental lunches towards the exotic during those years. It is with pride and pleasure that I admit that I made the poor dear sick as a dog on curries, enchiladas, tortas, injere & kifto, and kuwaleng itik.

Though she herself has since fled for paler parts of the country, the spirit of her food phobias lives on.

BRITISH QUISLINGISM

The British government has taken the extraordinary step of caving in, without a whimper, to fists being shaken impotently at them by angry illiterates.


Dutch member of parliament Geert Wilders said on Wednesday he would press ahead with plans to visit Britain on Thursday despite an official entry ban by the British government.

Perhaps the British are unaware that it is already too late to stop those who want to "spread extremism, hatred and violent messages" from entering - a Google search on the term 'Finsbury Mosque' will yield some surprising results. One might also want to question why so many hate-filled Islamic radicals and their preachers live in Britain. And, having established that Britain has become a hotbed for the dissemination of Jihadi ideologies, one could then very well ask the British government what the devil they mean by banning an elected politician, whose views they obviously fail to have researched in any meaningful way, from traveling across the channel - at the invite, nota bene, of one of their own parliamentarians.

One might also question whether Lord Ahmed, one of the ringleaders in this shameful circus, should ever be allowed outside the UK - as a provocateur and whore to Islamic extremists (that being a large segment of the British Labour Party, one might add), no useful purpose can be served by allowing such an unprincipled man access to either the continent or to North America.

EURABIA? HMMPH! AN ABSURD CONCEPT!

In an article in The Brussels Journal, journalist Paul Belien paints a picture of a Europe destined to disappear before a tide of Islamists and non-Europeans. He writes that Muslims will outnumber, by outbreeding, the European natives, and that in twenty-five years immigrants will take over from a population that has neither the will nor the spirit to resist.

That point of view is unnecessarily defeatist.


A generation from now, many of those Muslims will be European - much more European than their more noisy elements seem at present.

[They are more likely to blend into the overwhelming majority and common culture than blend into each other - on the way to sameness with an Algerian, for instance, a Pakistani will have to go through English and French first. A Dutch Moroccan will need German to speak to a Berlin Turk. And your average Somali in Rotterdam has nothing in common with a Bengali in Warsaw. Not even religion unites them, even though they claim that in common. The idea of a pan-Islamic Umma is an abstract concept that only grabs your loyalty if you speak the same language as whoever else is in your mob.]


There are already intellectuals, professionals, scholars, and businessmen of Muslim background - some of the best writing in Dutch today is by people of Turkish or Moroccan extraction. Their writing is secular, and humanist. And while they appreciate their parents culture and history, to them it is mostly something they know second or third-hand; they read about it, in Dutch, from an academic pov.
Hell will freeze over before they think of "returning" to the back of the Riff mountains or Anatolia.
If they were forced, by rising European xenophobia and intolerance, to do so, they would upset the applecart in North Africa and Asia Minor. They are too European.


The other tendency that is often overlooked is that underneath that flinter-thin veneer of civilization, most Europeans are still too darn close to the homicidal maniacs that they were for twenty centuries.
Europe has indeed experienced peace longer than ever before..... As a continent. As individual countries, much of Europe has experienced civil discord and repression: Spain was a brutal dictatorship until the seventies, along with Portugal and Greece. All of Eastern Europe was under the boot of Stalin and his successors until the eighties. Northern Ireland has barely had ten years of peace. The Balkans haven't even had that.
The Dutch didn't start getting over the loss of their empire till the seventies. The French still hold on to a few scraps of empire, and fought savagely in Indochina and North Africa till barely one generation ago. The British have sent troops overseas fairly regularly, even up to the present. Europeans are less removed from organized violence than we think.

Underneath that seeming calm (remember, flinter-thin veneer), the average European has less tolerance towards otherness than many Americans. The likelihood of ethnic bloodshed is probably greater than when anybody still felt any guilt over the Jews.


Turkish and Moroccan neighborhoods conveniently concentrate the probable victims of future pogroms, in combustible substandard housing, away from the limelight. The Banlieus of Paris will never be economically developed - any Arab living there who wants a better life will have to yank himself out of that environment and into the middle-class. And there is no other way to do that than by becoming middle-class. That same Arab will not look kindly on thuggery and goon-style behaviours from his kindred; they more than anything else will be a hindrance, and a threat to his family's wellbeing and future. And he knows that. Boy does he know that. The cries for a stronger police come loudest from the people on the verge of escaping poverty. They do not want the open doorway and the beckoning brightness to be shut off by Abdoullah the high-school drop-out or Iftakar the drug-dealer and petty-thief. Heck, they won't even admit that Abdoullah is their cousin, or Iftakar their former classmate.


Meanwhile, in the small towns of Europe, the inhabitants beat the crap out of anything too foreign. And shut off their society from weirdoes, freaks, and outsiders.

Trust me - I grew up in liberal, tolerant, humanist Holland. You do NOT want to be an immigrant in the country districts of that society. Those folks simply haven't discovered lynching yet; when they do, they'll take to it like they were to the manner born.

Every week, there are reports of immigrants being persecuted, beaten up, harassed out of their homes, threatened........
Pogrom doesn't seem to be a Dutch word.... Yet.
Other Europeans aren't any better. They too will discover the meaning of that practice, even if they have to invent a different word for it.

[Perhaps the term Serb will become a verb - even though many people seem to have forgotten that the Serbs committed mass-Hutu in the Balkans. It's worth speculating about.]


I do not fear for the Europe I know. It was not a very pleasant place to begin with, and that which was indeed pleasant will quite probably survive. The immigrants have already enriched the host countries - not only by their cheap labour, but also culturally.
As just one facet of that change, English food nowadays is even half-way edible (both Chicken Tikka Masala and Vindaloo compete for British National Dish), the Dutch certainly would face gustatory boredom were it not for Indonesian, Surinamese, Turkish, and Moroccan influences, and the best that can be said for German and Scandinavian cuisines is that they do not particularly offend (well, other than 'Curry Wurst' - that offends beyond all reason).

More Europeans today speak English than ever before, and European horizons have expanded enormously.
The world has become a different place. That is all. There is no deluge.

Now if only the twentieth century would finally penetrate to the provinces, things would be perfect.

What was particularly memorable about the 2001 Durban conference was the incest between third world gangster regimes, Muslim bigots, and failed states.
Kind of like the Arian woodstock, except with Melanin instead of pallor. But just as charming.


What were the results of the Durban conference?

The Jews (eternal targets of bigotry) were slammed by the Arabs (slave traders for millennia, who still discriminate against those who are neither Arab nor Muslim, and still surreptitiously support slavery).

Those who pretty much invented the slave trade were allowed to dominate the proceedings.

The African nations, who profited from selling their war-captives and minorities to Europeans and Arabs, demanded to be paid again. No mention of reparations for the actual descendants of the merchandise, who of course do not live in Africa anymore.
It was proposed that tax-money paid in part by the descendants of slaves should be given to those who are in part descended from the sellers of those same slaves. No one demanded that the Arabs pay any reparations at all. Which was "third world solidarity" in action, I guess.

India, whose treatment of its oppressed classes is uncivilized and a scandal, got off Scot-free by collaborating with Africa and the Arabs to slam Israel and the west.

There was no mention of discrimination against the Roma by the Slavs, or the depressing status of non-Christians in holy mother Russia either.

Shouldn't more time have been spent on actually discussing racism in the world and less time devoted to the consideration of a markedly anti-western agenda by a bunch of third world failures with abominable human rights records?

Might it not have been more productive to look at how America, Israel and European countries are dealing with minority issues?
These are after all reasonably successful nations who have actually attempted to deal with racism and discrimination.... quite unlike the repressive dictatorships which litter the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America.

The usual chorus of resentful tin-pot tyrants and greedy third-world beggar nations was allowed to dominate the discussion, giving a shrill refrain of anti-western rhetoric, and sweeping their own glaring faults under the rug. One would almost think that hunger for an easy buck drove the proceedings... quite understandable, given that those who steal from their own people often see no reason why they shouldn't steal from everybody else.

Comments? A different opinion? Speak up, I am keen to hear your point of view.

EMPTYING TRASH CANS AND SCREAMING OBSCENITIES

There has been firm pressure to step-down and take a backseat this Sunday as regards the actions of the local soneiYisroel.

Our friend 'Amar' had this reaction:


I was downtown (observing) the night of the massive anti-war demonstrations in San Francisco. I think it was March 2003. I did not know what to think of the pending war, and I was curious to get the perspective of the anti-war folks.

The police permitted small groups of "demonstrators", sometimes just one "demonstrator", to stand in front of a line of cars for a long time, tieing up that line of cars un-necessarily. One "demonstrator" was letting small cars though faster, but SUV sat for a long time. Of course small cars behind the SUV were suffering just as the SUV driver suffered. This was happening all over Market street and nearby streets. There were numerous police on foot and in police cars parked, thinking all this was just fine.

Other "demonstrators" were emptying trash cans in the streets, doing various acts of vandalism.
Again, this is fine with the police.

I spent some time asking various "demonstrators" what would they propose as an alternative to deposing the Iraqi dictator. I could not find anyone that had even thought about it.

These folks that I observed and spoke to were not demonstrators at all, they were young people having fun. The police thought it was just fine.

The San Francisco police are so lame that they are more deeply frightening to me than police that are overly aggressive in policing.

So, as far as I can tell - and the JVP folks might not know this - they could get away with anything, including verbally assaulting attendees at close range, and the SF police would do nothing. At least that's on my experience. I hope I'm wrong.

A dark assessment, but it is largely justified.
The police will probably intervene before any actual violence happens.
But threatening and cursing the attendees and their children will be considered free speech.
As long as nothing actually gets thrown...... while there is anybody watching.
Just grimace and bear it.


I fully expect some of the anti-Israel crowd to scream obscenities and epithets this Sunday.


The good news is that there will be plenty of witnesses.


I'll be happy to translate certain Arabic phrases for people who have never heard them before, and explain that these exact phrases were screamed by angry mobs in front of the consulate or in Civic center in the last few years, just as they were in 1929 in Hebron, Tel Aviv, Tzfas, and Jerusalem.

Who knows, it might get their danders up.

The New York rabbi protest arrest has been noted overseas also, but, like in the US, has not been given much airtime. Or printtime.

[One could suspect that that is because rabbis are well-mannered and educated, unlike many other protestors - but that would lead to a nasty crack about the other side, and I would not ever want to say anything nasty about the other side, heaven forefend - such nice sincere folks, those angry protestors breaking windows and screaming death threats. Really. And so very macho and studly too! Priorites, dear readers, priorities.]

Per the article, the reason for the protest was "the constant disregard by the UN of the nuclear programme and the continuing threats by Iran to destroy Israel. The protesters requested the UN to exclude Iran from the security council and other departments because the threat to exterminate the entire population of another UN member is a serious criminal issue, and according to the rules of the UN should be seen as a declaration of war. The absurdity that Iran can even be a member of the UN is überhaupt a shanda" (yes, schande in Dutch means exactly the same in Yinglish!).



One of the responses, by someone named Tristan, is worth quoting in full:

It's nice to know that the threat of Iran is not bagatellized by everybody over there. The sad thing is that Tristan represents precisely the type of Dutchman most likely to come over here. Some of the Dutch are giving up on the place, and, with good reason, bailing out.


Further note: Steg, who alerted me to the Dutch language article, stresses that the entire thing was *pre-arranged* and *pre-orchestrated* between the protesters and the police. They went there specifically in order to get arrested, to make the protest more dramatic. The police weren’t picking on or persecuting them at all.

NOTE: The Socialist Party, which is the modern-day guise of the Stalinists (both Mao and Moscow), have the voting loyalty of over twenty five percent of the Dutch. Astute readers of the comments underneath Dutch newspaper articles on the internet and visitors to Dutch internet fora will have noticed that there are two underlying practices to much Dutch commentary. The first one is 'azijnzijken', the second is 'miereneuken'.

[Azijnzijken = Micturating vinegar; making spiteful remarks no matter how inappropriate, because one just doesn't like somebody or something. Vicious slander, lashon horo.
Miereneuken = Committing congress with ants; finding fault, no matter how much of a stretch, no matter how irrelevant, no matter how small-minded it proves one to be.]


The other thing that these same astute readers will have noticed is the conflation of radical Islamic, European Communist, and Neo-Nazi rhetoric.


Because of this it is hard to figure out the ideology of commentators.


Often one part of their bushwa can seem right-wing paranoid, while another part goes off in a different direction entirely. The European left adheres to the same conspiracy theories as the European right. And our ultra left and right often mirror that pattern (American extremists seem incapable of original thought, and imitate the Europeans - especially when criticizing the US and sneering at Americans).


The Dutch and German neonazis say virtually the same thing about the US as the communist activists in Western Europe.

They aver that the US is controlled by Zionists who wish to declare a holy war against Islam on behalf of Israel and big business interests, in order to end up controlling the world. Communists stress the business connection a bit more; neonazis stress the evil Jewish connection. The racists on both sides connipt their fits about the Jews, asserting that it is because of Jews that there are problems with non-whites – again, slight variance: communists claim that the draining of the third world (resources, labour) is a Jewish business plot, neonazis insist that the presence of the third world inside Europe is an attempt to weaken the Aryans.
In the rhetorical scrimmage, the extremes often support each other – their actual political involvement is mostly hypothetical, whereas making points and pushing ideas is daily business.

This pattern spills over into dialoguing with our own opposition here in the Bay Area – it is often hard to tell where they are coming from and what their underlying ideological basis is – the anti-Semitic strain is often at odds with much else.


Anti-Semitism is a religion. Of course, so are Marxism and Satanism. ‘Nuff said.

ALAS! ALACK! OH WOE! AND SOMETHING CHEESY

On the way to the Indian restaurant yesterday evening we passed by the cheese shop. Savage Kitten snorted angrily, but did not say anything.

An hour later, as we waddled home replete, we passed the cheese shop again. And now she howled. A long kvetching ranting wail, though not so loud as to draw any attention from any passers-by, relating that she had gone there recently to buy some Schokinag, but all... they... had... was... Scharfenberger!
Which, apparently, is crap. Her opinion. Utter crap.
Despicable overpriced snob white twenty something yuppie ignoramous rotten garbage crap.


Can't say I particularly disagree.

Schokinag is good stuff.

Scharfenberger, while highly reputed among the snobnoscenti, just ain't right. Good chocolate is more than advanced chemistry and math. There is no inspiration in Scharfenberger.
Tain't bad, but it ain't exciting either.

The cheese shop has recently changed hands, and the food maven wot run the place is no longer there. Now it is uninspired as far as anything which isn't cheese is concerned (the cheese selection is sterling - hence the nickname 'the cheese shop', it is actually called something else).


Good drinking chocolate is hard to find in San Francisco (Ghirardelli is not nearly as good as the tourist brochures claim). Schokinag drinking chocolate has fragments of ground chunk-chocolate in among the prepared cacao, which give the hot beverage made with their mixture a wonderfull mouth-feel and aroma. And a depth of flavour. Most hot chocolate mixes are little more than mediocre generic cacao with essences and stabilizers. But Schokinag is indeed special. Luscious.

[Mind you, I am not going to tell her that because of me her supply of Schokinag diminished quite a bit more rapidly than it should have. There are some things one's significant other does NOT need to know. Like about the afternoon that I had a furious argument about wild clover honey with her teddy bear. She does not need to know that either. I do not wish to pay with my life for speaking firmly to the Ms. Bruin about honey, nor for stealing Schokinag.]


We still have Cadbury's. And Droste in a pinch. One can always melt some fine bar chocolate and whip it into the scalded milk. Add a pinch of freshly grated cinnamon (not cassia but real Ceylon canela).

Some vaunted Mexican cacao mix is also available at the cheese shop. It costs nearly twenty dollars for a tin. What kind of price is that? Does anybody really think very many Mexicans will fork over twenty bucks for cacao? Any Mexicans? Any at all? Hmmmph!
