I am pleased to see that Dr. Mike's little talk to the audience of the Rachel Corrie flick did not go unnoticed. Nay, it even generated a critical review from one of the supporters of the ISM that is delightfully over the top.
The author, who goes by the nomdeguerre of 'M', does more to discredit his or her own side than any amount of shrill hysterics at a riot could manage.
And I love him (or her) for it.
Consider this lovely quote:

No, Rachel Corrie was of the approximate Jewishness of Ahmed Ismail Hassan Yassin and Hank Nasrallah. But it's so interesting that you should pose that question - it perfectly demonstrates how narrow your spectrum of awareness actually is. Are you, in fact, sentient?
I'm afraid the alleged progressives in the Bay Area, if M is anything to go by, are hopelessly bourgeois, jejeune even, and quite incapable of anything more than trope and cant.
Other than new interpretations of the sound of scratched vinyl, there is precious little that can be expected of them.

ANTI-SEMITIC ORGANIZATION INT'L ANSWER BECOMING JUSTICE FIRST?

International ANSWER, known for subverting the peace movement with their anti-Israel agenda, appears to be trying to hide their tracks. Posters up and down Market street have the ANSWER address and phone number, but show the name "JUSTICE FIRST" - alleged to be "a newly formed national organization that is dedicated to fighting for people's economic, social and political rights".

International ANSWER may have tanked their reputation with the public by their over-the-top "blame Israel for everything" antics, but they have most certainly made enemies of the Department of Public Works with their littering and nuisance-postering in several parts of the city. The latter issue has caused a legal problem for ANSWER.
The posters on Market Street were probably put up by ANSWER activists heading to the Federal Building to pack the public seating at ANSWER's Court of Appeals hearing on illegal postering.
Per the rebuttable presumption clause of the relevant ordinance, if an illegal poster has your organization's name and contact info on it, there is a rebuttable presumption that you are responsible for the posters that were put up. The burden is on you to prove the contrary.
The six elderly communists 'packing' the courtroom are merely there to create a threatening environment, as there will be no input permitted from the public in today's hearing.

The DPW has imposed fines for postering violations against the local ANSWER Coalition that now total more than $45,000! Similar circumstances also exist in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
There was an initial finding for the DPW in Superior Court, but the ANSWER Coalition and its renowned civil liberties attorney, Carol Sobel, have relentlessly pursued an appeal in order to protect free speech and the First Amendment. Nearly all of the citations against us are for flyers and posters posted in the Mission District of San Francisco. Political and cultural notices are regarded as nothing more than "blight" by the developers and big property owners, and their friends in city government.
There are hundreds of volunteers who work with the ANSWER Coalition. We have a notice up in our office published by DPW regarding sign posting requirements, and inform people who pick up our material about the legal ways in which material can be posted. Our flyers are also available on-line, as is common practice these days.
We have no way to control what anyone does with the materials we make available. Yet, in the administrative hearings held in DPW, whoever's name is on a cited poster or flyer is presumed guilty under the doctrine of "rebuttable presumption." Before April 2003 when the ordinance was amended, there had to be an actual link shown between an individual and an illegally posted flyer. Not anymore.
In every case that we, or our attorneys have witnessed, the cited party is found guilty—whether or not they posted the offending flyer—and usually fined the maximum—an astounding $150 for each flyer and $300 for each poster! The DPW's position is that they don't have to show anything more than the name on the literature in question. There are no rules of evidence, in fact there is no real due process at all in these hearings.
That the DPW adheres to this "process" is hardly surprising given the fact that under the April 2003 amended ordinance, DPW now gets to keep all of the fines levied, instead of them going into the city's general fund. The fines of $150 to $300 for each flyer taped to a pole are ludicrous. If one is cited for a few flyers, the fines can easily exceed those assessed in many serious criminal cases..
The ANSWER Coalition, as you know, has played a key role organizing many mass protests against war, racism and bigotry of all kinds in San Francisco.. We have already been forced to divert from our real work far too many hours and thousands of dollars from our very limited funds. Now we are threatened with tens of thousands of dollars in fines, which would be impossible for us to pay.

An overwhelming majority of their events singled out Israel, no matter what the purported raison for the actual protest, and mister Becker himself is on record as having thrown a monumental tantrum in public at one point, screaming that the Zionists were behind it, the Zionists were behind it, the Zionists were behind it!
One of the things that International ANSWER has recently attempted to do is blame the Israelis and the Mossad for the police-shooting death of a black man in BART at New Year.
Previously, when certain city supervisors were covering for Richard Becker and his revolutionaries, charges against ANSWER's egregious littering, thuggish behaviour, and promotion of hate never went anywhere.
Fortunately the skin-blemished haramzad and most of his cadre of morally corrupt acolytes are no longer in office, and their influence has started to wane.
Still a few more to go before the city is entirely free of that lot, though.
Those who have been at ANSWER rallies can attest to the nauseatingly high level of anti-Semitism and anti-Israel venom.
The speeches by International ANSWER leaders and guest-speakers (most of which are findable on the internet) mark them as egomaniacs and psychopaths.
Except, of course, for that insane performance by Cindy Sheehan - I am still not quite sure what the heck she was trying to say, and no one else who listened to her that day has been able to figure it out either. She may have been on medication.

NONE OF THEM WERE MUSLIMS
In 1948, British forces in Malaya killed twenty four unarmed civilians. The perpetrators were all vindicated by British authorities, it being asserted that the soldiers had no choice but to shoot them to prevent the unarmed men fleeing into the jungle. Their village was subsequently set on fire, and the survivors prevented from burying the dead for a week.
The British government is not unduly concerned about this event.
The Malaysian government has shown scant interest in raking it up.
It is not an issue.
The victims were not Muslims.
They were Chinese Malayans.
After the world war, Britain was concerned with placating the restless Malays and assuring themselves of a source for rubber and tin. The Chinese Malayans, who had resisted the Japanese, were less important in the grand scheme of things than the Malays, who had quiescently collaborated with the Japanese.
Neither the British nor the Malays were concerned with justice for the Chinese Malayans, who had been particularly brutalized by the Japanese occupiers, or with including the Chinese Malayans in future power structures of the soon-to-be independent Malay state, choosing instead to 'reward' them for their stubborn resistance to the Japanese by a policy of ethnic exclusionism (the seed for apartheid policies against Chinese in modern Malaysia).
This, probably more than anything else, led to an emergency that lasted twelve years.
The Chinese community had been robbed and repressed by the Japanese, the Malays had collaborated, and were well rewarded. When the British returned, the Malays loyally collaborated again, to very great advantage.
Many of the Malayan Chinese consequently saw little choice but to join the insurgency.
The men of the village of Batang Kali who were killed by the British were not Muslims but Chinese. In the eyes of the British, that meant that they were almost certainly rebels. And in the eyes of the Malays, they were Chinese.
Both of those qualities were good reasons to execute them. The British were fighting a war, the Malays were profitably collaborating with the strongest party.

I can understand the British authorities being unenthusiastic about re-examining the facts.
No ex-colonial power is glad to have its misbehaviour highlighted.
The British, French, and Dutch insist that their role in the East was that of enlightened bringers of civilization, law, and order, and that colonialism only benefitted the natives, who were incapable of administering themselves according to the standards of the civilized world. And who really wishes to dispute that?
I can also understand why the Malaysian authorities are not overly concerned - these were not Muslims, and therefore by the standards of Malaysia they can not really count for much.
Besides, there is no point in encouraging ANY sense of grievance among the Chinese. Surely that only leads to trouble?
I'm just noting that this was a war crime. One of many war crimes committed by the colonial powers in the years after the world war - thousands of people were killed or tortured in the eastern territories during the last gasps of the British, French, and Dutch empires.
This is just another war crime which our friends and allies (the former colonial powers) would rather forget. Why bring up dead issues?
After all, they lost their empires.
I also note that the survivors are now few in number, old and frail. When the last of them has died and still no justice has been done, the official version of events will stand. The victims will only be remembered as 24 among the tens of thousands of "communists" killed during the insurrection.
Seeing as so few Muslims died, compared to so many Chinese, the victory was without a doubt well worth it. Especially for the Malays.

Sometimes the anti-Semites and self-hating crowd do something so staggeringly goofy that you really have to wonder what goes on their little pin-heads. Then you remember: these are Berkeleyites.
And suddenly everything falls into place.

Rest assured that Berkeley Presbyterians fair make me vomit, especially when compared to strenge Dutch Calvinists. I'm none too happy with the Methodists either, but in the main something so eccentric as Methodism can be safely ignored.
Still, Tallullah Bankhead was a Methodist, as was Ulysses S. Grant - that means that they can't be all bad. Tallullah Bankhead!!!
And finally, I note with wry amusement that they clarified that food would be served. Anybody familiar with Passover would naturally assume that that was the case, but it is likely that the overwhelming majority of attendees will be severely self-righteous Prods and very superior people who do not know much about other cultures other than that they disapprove of them and normally don't socialize with that lot. These aren't the kind of people who naturally associate food with celebration or pleasure - that's what sneering disapproval is for.

Rest assured that Berkeley Presbyterians fair make me vomit, especially when compared to strenge Dutch Calvinists. I'm none too happy with the Methodists either, but in the main something so eccentric as Methodism can be safely ignored.
Still, Tallullah Bankhead was a Methodist, as was Ulysses S. Grant - that means that they can't be all bad. Tallullah Bankhead!!!
And finally, I note with wry amusement that they clarified that food would be served. Anybody familiar with Passover would naturally assume that that was the case, but it is likely that the overwhelming majority of attendees will be severely self-righteous Prods and very superior people who do not know much about other cultures other than that they disapprove of them and normally don't socialize with that lot. These aren't the kind of people who naturally associate food with celebration or pleasure - that's what sneering disapproval is for.

CATCHING JVP IN BED WITH THE BAD GUYS
Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) asserts that they have no bias and are merely in favour of a peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. And, like many in the peace-activist community, they claim that criticism of Israel is valid, and cannot possibly be anti-Semitic - being pro-Palestinian does not, in their statements, necessarily mean supporting the destruction of Israel.
In such a manner they have bamboozled concerned yet uninformed people into believing that they are a valid voice for peace, and not at all involved in anything that enables or empowers bigots, racists, and Israel-haters.
Sometimes, however, their kommisars show their true colours.

The Electronic Intifada unreservedly speaks in favour of several terrorist organizations, Israel-hater Joel Beinin's reputation is pungently rotten. It should be surprising to find Sydney Levy at the same table as the other two gentlemen.
Given his background, however, and his work in other fields, this blogger feels that it should have been entirely predictable.
Sydney Levy is instrumental in several anti-Israel campaigns, most notably divestment. On the other hand, he is also extremely active in immigrant rights campaigns and various other very worthwhile causes, and it is probable that he is sincerely humanistic in that context.
But regarding Israel, he is profoundly and terrifyingly ignorant, and biased.
As with many people, an activist role in one area flatters him into assuming an expertise and credibility in other areas that is entirely unwarranted.
The enslavement of liberalism in America to the hatreds and bigotries of the new anti-Semites starts with precisely such enablers and apologists.

The students of the Bay Area are now more ill-served than ever. Their teachers, rather than being impartial instructors and examples of sane and sensible behaviour, have become opinionated idiots.
That is, if one is to believe and take seriously the hot-air coming out of some of their organizations.

The Oakland Education Association which represents the teachers in Oakland, California has passed a strong resolution protesting the Israeli attack on the people of Gaza and the role of the US in supporting these assaults.

The OEA unreservedly condemn the murderous Israeli assault on Gaza, their deliberate targeting of the civilian population, including schools and hospitals, and Israel's ongoing collective punishment of the Palestinian people which has been carried out with the strong support of the U.S. government. We support the Right to Return and call for the establishment of a bi-national secular state in Israel-Palestine.
In line with this motion, we encourage teachers to open their classrooms to discussion and teaching on the crisis in Gaza.

Quite the pronunciamento, that. Another fatuous utterance by a public body in the Bay Area that indicates a lack of functioning grey matter at the highest levels.
It is no mistake that we refer to Berkeley and San Francisco as People's Republics.

DRECKY BRIT NEWS REPORTING
Is the esteemed BBC guilty of supressio veri and suggestio falsi?
Well, that depends.
On whether or not you are a critical reader.

Notice how studiously neutral this is. The BBC does not mention the most pertinent details, namely that Samir Kuntar was actually the one who did the killing. Instead they use a passive phrasing - "another man and his four-year old daughter WERE killed". Not what it should have been: 'Samir Kuntar murdered a man and his four-year old daughter'.
Samir Kuntar deliberately shot the 'other man' (Danny Haran, who was a civilian), then held him under water to make sure he did not survive, and also deliberately murdered the four-year old daughter (Eynat Haran). Samir Kuntar slammed the little girl's head against a rock, and then bashed in her brains with his rifle.
" --- another man and his four-year-old daughter were killed"
Another pertinent detail is that the mother (the wife of Danny Haran) was hiding only feet away from Samir Kuntar and his companions. Her fear that she and her other child would be killed was very real. She was terrified with good reason. It was under those frightful circumstances that she accidentally stifled her child.
Nope, the BBC instead mentions the deaths of these Israelis as if they were merely incidental to something else. As, indeed, to too many typical Brits and Europeans, such Israeli deaths are. It is the function of Jews to be killed. The BBC finds it hard to see them in any other role. It was an accident, surely, but not something for which Samir Kuntar was entirely to blame - those Jews were in the wrong place, and Mr. Kuntar was involved in a cause. Had the Jews not started it (in 1973, 1967, 1948, 1929, 1290, 1255, 1217, 1144, 33), those deaths would not have happened.
The facts are that Samir Kuntar and his gang infiltrated with the intent to murder Israelis, they did not accidentally stray across the border, they were not combatants in a war zone, they were not fighting invading forces, they were not attacked first.
They were not engaged in some great act of derring-do. They were terrorists, plain and simple. Yet to the BBC these are unimportant details.
One suspects that the BBC deliberately bagatellizes. As indeed one also suspected that they did during the 2006 war. One rather wonders whether the BBC wouldn't be more comfortable moving their offices to some Arab capital. Someplace nearer the partisans to whom they pander.
Just because the BBC is better than many other news sources on the old-world side of the pond does not mean that they are good. Just glib.

THE QURAN, THE PROPHET MUHAMMAD AND HIS CHILD BRIDE, UNDESIRABLES, TERRORISTS, AND OTHER SUBJECTS
Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders of the Freedom party said yesterday that if Muslims want to stay and be a part of (Dutch) society they should tear out half the Quran and discard it, as it espouses values and attitudes which are incompatible with western civilization. He also made mention of Muhammad's favourite wife, Aisha, whom the prophet became engaged to when she was six, and married (with consummation) when she was nine. He further pointed out that if the prophet Muhammad were alive today, he would have to be deported as an undesirable or locked up as a terrorist. Naturally, the internet is buzzing, with several writers having fits.
His party has nine seats. Judging by some of the reactions, they may have two or three times that number after the next election (four years from now, or earlier, if the just formed cabinet falls).
He's a hatemonger, and intemperate. But he's also a ballsy loudmouthed gadfly. And pisses off the standard-issue Dutch politicians and Hague bureaucrats.
Sort of the Pim Fortuyn of anti-Islamists.

For some odd reason, many Dutch, who normally support all the usual liberal humanist progressive points of view, seem to be of the opinion that if he gets whacked, that's to be expected, only natural, perfectly all right, and his own fault.
They may be overlooking the idea that he has every right to say whatever intolerant thing he wants to, and has a right to protection if there are threats upon his life.
Instead, many have opined that a recently uncovered plot to assassinate him in a suicide car-bomb attack which aimed to also kill as many innocent bystanders as possible was probably justified.
[How do you say 'chicken' in Dutch? Kip. But it doesn't have quite the same connotations. Say 'lafaard' (coward) instead.]

As you might have noticed, we Dutch speakers sometimes get a mouth on, and say things which are not exactly easy on the digestion. Geert Wilders, whose opinions I mostly do not share, seems to have a talent for that. A talent which Pim Fortuyn and Theo van Gogh also had.
Abrasive utterances are a fine Dutch tradition, treasured because they get under the skin of all the right people. They should be encouraged, especially in a country which suffers from massive mental rigidity such as the Netherlands. Dutch deftigheid often needs a clout in the face or a poke in the eye.
If anything happens to Geert Wilders, the public discourse will be less offensive, but very much poorer, and likely stifled.
