Somebody With whom I work returned from foreign climes this week, and I'm interested to hear about it. That he ate well while there is guaranteed, as is the fact that it was warmer there than here. His wife had a great time -- she is more social-media active -- but in the years I've known him I haven't seen him on Facebook more than ... zero times.
There is a whole mass of people out there who just avoid the internet.
Not only social media. Everything. Encyclopedias, news, entertainment or educational videos and articles, mis-information, politicians ... everything.
Not surprisingly, they don't cook either. And quite unthinkingly, their food habits have not changed noticably over decades. Grampa ate otterschinken mit schpargus every Tuesday, his sons ate otterschinken mit schpargus every Tuesday, and I've taught my children to eat otterschinken mit schpargus. Every Tuesday.
They all eat otterschinken mit schpargus on Tuesday.
Except for Janice. She married that Polish guy.
I have no idea what they eat Tuesdays.
Maybe they don't eat then.
Vegans!
Somewhere outside of Omaha, along the highway, there is a diner that all the truckers know about, which serves the best otterschinken mit schpargus. Not just on Tuesday, every day of the week. Whenever they can they make a bee-line for it, even on a Sunday, because they haven't had otterschinken mit schpargus in ever so long, dang, it must have been months, when was it? Two weeks ago.
Today is pizza day. It's Friday. Every week Friday I have a slice of rather crappy pizza for lunch, it reminds me of my college years, as well as the war when the French would stop shooting at us for two hours every Friday to have some bad pizza. I always drench it with hot sauce. The French did not have hot sauce, because they're heathens, but we do. Which is why America is the greatest.
Tomato sauce. Cheese. Something which might be meat.
On a bread-like crust, with hot sauce.
America! Tradition.
