All in all I am fairly pleased that some restaurants in Chinatown have a customer base that's almost entirely non-tourist. After all, having lived in Europe as an American, and having been personally held responsible during my schoolboy years there for the assassination of both Kennedys and Martin Luther King, the Vietnam War, the Christmas bombing of Laos, the death of Salvador Allende, and America's ongoing struggle with race, I tend to avoid people with European accents, and given that England, Ireland, and Scotland, Scandinavia, and the whole of continental Europe, are bigoted societies that at the present time are so damned anti-American and anti-Semitic that their accents are an immediate danger flag that sends my antenna up, it is wisest to exercise social caution around those people.
Tourists also include people from the pig-ass ignorant part of America, unfortunately, that being almost everything between the SF Ferry Building and Staten Island.
For whom my own accent is objectionable.
"Where you from, boy?!?"
There are a number of businesses in Chinatown where have I almost never used English. In Cantonese I probably also have an accent, it's inevitable, but it does not excite accusations that I'm foreign, and I don't have to agree with anyone that either Europe OR the United States is the best damned thing that happened to civilization since Adam.
It never even comes up.
The waiter recognized me from previous times. So lunch was enjoyable and did not involve even a single scrap of English. I feel sad for the American Chinese woman who picked up her lunch, though, because she had no choice. And thankfully no delivery-wallahs came to mutely show the order on screen while I was there, because "Americans" and "Europeans" don't eat luch at tea time.
Also, there was absolutely nothing there that indicated support of any local sports teams. None of the usual tacky cheap garbage stating that the Giants, Forty Niners, Raiders, Sharks, Warriors, Valkyries, and assorted other goomba fetishes were a gift to humanity totally like firggin' geniuses divinley destined to win the pennant, cup, or figurine.
So it was quite a civilized place.
