A while back I mentioned provincial Dutch Catholicism as having produced that bitter anti-Semite Andries van Agt.
Former prime-minister Andreas Antonius ('Dries') van Agt is a type very common in Europe, where some people (perhaps subconsciously) regret that Hitler didn't 'finish the job', and others have become hatefilled Xenophobes since the various socialist governments of the eighties and nineties let in 'all those damn foreigners'.
The conflict between liberal values and rigidly conservative social conditioning produces strange and interesting results.
Many small-town Europeans suffer from anomie, and a sense that people who are not like them (and therefore wrong wrong wrong!) have taken over the world. It grieves them.
VAN AGT
Dries van Agt is the paradigm of that type and their venomously disapproving attitude.
For a number of years now he has vented an anti-Semitism no less virulent for being garbed in language which is considered politically correct in the Netherlands - where the excuse that criticism of Israel is not necessarily anti-Semitic probably originated.
[Many Dutch slam Israel in the most repellent terms, then blandly explain that it is the hyper-sensitivity of unreasonable Jews to object. The Dutch, in fact, 'are Israel's staunchest supporters, always have been, they too suffered during the war (and why do you Jews keep bringing that period back up?!?), and if Jews were normal people (instead of hatefilled racist jerks) they would seriously listen to what sensible folk in all sincerity tell them'.]
My exceedingly low opinion of Andries van Agt prompted a reader to complain at length.

No, van Agt is indeed an anti-Semite. There is no doubt about it.
Jonathan Pollard is a spy. Why do you bring him up? I shall never defend him, and his weal and woe are of no consequence to me.
The sinking of the USS Liberty was a mistake. And a particularly stupid one at that. Opinions are divided over the cause and circumstances.
Just like there are diverse opinions over the unfortunate "accidents" that caused the death of Leon Klinghofer, or the 241 US Marines who inexplicably perished in Beirut in 1983.
To the European supporters of the Palestinians, those deaths were both accidental and justified. Obviously, as an American, I have a different opinion. I also don't think that the plane that fell out of the sky over Lockerbie simply malfunctioned, but I've heard that better educated European engineering experts have concluded that there were defective engine parts..... sloppy American manufacturing, I suppose.
Nevertheless, that too is a European opinion I cannot share. Must be a personal defect.

Concerning Dries van Agt, trust me, I know more about that man than I care to. Self-satisfied and self-righteous people like him are unfortunately a dime a dozen.
Plus that verkrampte Kattelieke background from whence he sprang, I've had exposure to that. He may have lost some of the religious convictions of that environment and that upbringing - but he has not lost either the anger, or the fanaticism.
He is, like so many Dutchmen, absolutely certain that he is right. And therefore convinced that those who hold a different opinion are wrong - and not only wrong, they must be evil.

Well, you aren't ALL that bad. Some of you are far worse, and a few are much better.
As someone recently suggested, there's a proportion of halvegaren in every population. I'm inclined to think that there are just more of them on the other side of the Atlantic, especially in small tightly packed countries. Living so close together makes for a greater degree of dysfunctionality, don't you agree?
The flip answer to your question about my assurance that I am right would be that I am not thinking in Dutch, therefore I am far less likely to be wrong.
In actuality, I cannot KNOW that I am right.
But I do know that most of the anti-Israel rhetoric is wrong. Wrong in the sense of ignorant, wrong in the sense of biased, wrong in that it holds Israel to a higher standard than any other nation, wrong in that it reacts with outrage at almost everything Israel does (while often 'eliding' over the most egregious acts of Arabs), and wrong in that it nuances and spins the hatred and violence of one side, while insisting that the other side is eternally the aggressor.

Somewhat less than respectfully, I disagree with them and their point of view.
Yes, he forwarded data which the Israelis had a right to under agreements with the US government. And yes, if the US government had held to those agreements, the Israelis would have gotten that data anyway. And another yes, due to the interference of such high-placed administration officials as Caspar Weinberger, Pollard was slammed with the maximum sentence, unlike such clear enemy agents as members of the East-bloc diplomatic corps, Chinese governmental functionaries in the US, and Arab students.
But he broke our laws. I do not care what his motivation was, nor do I care how disproportionate his sentence. He put himself beyond my concern by acting not as an American, nor as a concerned citizen, but as a spy.
I can understand that many Israelis consider him a hero, and wish him released. They are entitled to their wrong opinion.
Pollard, as far as I'm concerned, needs to sit in jail forever.

VALUES
I have no sympathy for the double standards of the European and American left (and the entire frikkin' third world) as regards Israel, and I will disagree with those who support Israel when they show anything approaching such a bias.
Israel has a right to exist, with secure borders, in peace.
I refuse to have anything to do with people who yell 'itbach al Yahud' (slaughter the Jews), 'Falastin balad'na w'al Yahud qalab'na' (Palestine is our land and the Jews are our dogs), 'ba ruh, ba dam, nafdeek ya Falastin' (with our soul, with our blood, we will redeem you oh Palestine), 'al mawt al Yahud' (death to the Jews), or even that popular slogan used by American leftwing anti-Semites, which is echoed at every single pro-Pally demonstration in Western Europe: "all of Palestine will be free from the river to the sea" - which frankly states the intent to destroy the Jewish state and ethnically cleanse the land.
That is the behaviour of Berkeleyites and thugs, and has occurred at every pro-Palestinian rally for as long as I can remember. It is wrong.
By standing with those who utilize those slogans, activists validate and endorse such ideas. Which includes people like Andries van Agt, Gretta Duisenberg, Anja Meulenbelt, and countless thousands of 'politically correct' Dutchmen, Englishmen, Frenchmen, and other Europeans.
AFTERTHOUGHTS
At one demonstration in front of the consulate on Montgomery Street, I was informed that I was a dog, a pig, a monkey, inhuman, the son of a whore, and that I deserved to be shot, gutted, slashed open, have my children killed, and see my wife raped. This by several supporters of the Palestinian cause.
I was also told that I am a 'Jew faggot'. I humbly accept that appellation as a badge of honour - what the Dutch would call a 'geuzenaam'.
Angry riots and threats of death, plus several incidents that could have become violent, do not leave me with any positive appreciation of the pro-Palestinian side. Which includes Bay Area Women in Black, Jewish Voice for Peace, Students for Justice in Palestine, and International ANSWER, in addition to agitators bused in from San Jose (South Bay Mobilization), Marin, and various heathenish pig-butt boondocks.
For the time being I shall not shop at most Arab-owned businesses, and I will NOT be patronizing ANY Pakistani enterprises - most especially not Shalimar (run by a bunch of untkichotes from Peshawar and Lahore), Darbar (Indian, but arrogant Delhiwallah muslims - sab Delhi-main baqrichot hai), any of the shitty Paki dabbas in the tenderloin (all of them are bigots and unclean), or any Indian restaurant that does NOT have a Sikh on staff.
I will, however, continue to drop by the place run by Monzer from Gaza.
Despite the horrendously offensive things that come out of his mouth, and his verbal slamming of every ethnic group not his own, he has shown by his treatment of others that he does not put his bias into practice, wishes well on almost everybody, and appreciates anyone who treats others with respect.
Though his wine is vile and undrinkable, his consideration and kindness to many in his neighborhood is exemplary and deserves commendation.

Van Agt,wil geen Joden in Israel.
Oud-premier Dries van Agt heeft een nieuwe rechtspersoon opgericht om de Joodse staat te bestrijden. Stichting ‘The Rights Forum’ beoogt ‘het internationale recht’ in te zetten om de Joden uit hun eigen land te verwijderen en in een onverdedigbare kuststrook terug te dringen. In het forum zitten nog andere verdwaasde geesten, waaronder minister van Staat Hans van den Broek, dezelfde Van den Broek die vorig jaar opriep om de Wildersfilm ‘Fitna’ te verbieden en die in 1987 hoogstpersoonlijk staatscensuur pleegde om het islamitische regime in Teheran niet tegen de haren in te strijken, dezelfde Van den Broek die op 10 december in Pauw en Witteman de TV-kijkers probeerde wijs te maken dat Israel in 1967 een agressieoorlog tegen de Arabische buurlanden zou zijn begonnen.
Zeg mij wie uw vrienden zijn, dan zal ik zeggen wie u bent. De afgelopen jaren heeft van Agt zich met verschillende andere anti-Joodse rechtspersonen ingelaten, die het beoogde terminale doel m.b.t. de Joodse staat echter geen stap dichterbij gebracht hebben. Zo sloot hij zich aan bij de stichting ‘Stop de Bezetting’ van Gretta Duisenberg en zocht hij in het kader van de in Hoevelaken gevestigde ‘Stichting International Forum for Justice and Peace’ zonder schaamte het gezelschap van de beruchte Zweedse antisemiet Jöran Jermas.
Hoppen en shoppen in de jihad tegen Israel. Wim Kortenoeven schreef in 2005 het volgende artikel over de duistere drijfveren van Van Agt en andere pro-Palestijnse activisten. Het stuk heeft nog niets aan actualiteit ingeboet.

Kruistocht der veragtelijke ariërs

Op 22 augustus 2005 begon een nieuwe Europese kruistocht, die het onverbloemde doel heeft Jeruzalem en andere delen van het Heilige Land uit handen van de Joden te helpen bevrijden. Aangevoerd door de Rome-getrouwe CDA-coryfee Dries van Agt, sloeg de voorhoede van het Europese leger zijn kamp op in het vlakbij Jeruzalem gelegen Ramallah.
In die naar de islamitische god vernoemde stad lispelde Van Agt ten overstaan van de Nederlandse media vrome woorden over gerechtigheid voor de door het boosaardige Israel vertrapte Palestijnse Arabieren en deed hij een gepassioneerde oproep aan de lidstaten van de Europese Unie de Joodse staat met een boycot te treffen. Kauft nicht bei Juden. Daar is geen woord Frans bij. Het aanzetten daartoe wordt naar eigen zeggen de nieuwe levensopdracht van de in Heilig Land-stichting woonachtige oud-premier en minister van Justitie. Justitie, gerechtigheid.
Pensionado Van Agt heeft zich ontpopt als passende slippendrager van ‘zwarte weduwe’ Gretta Duisenberg, die haar eigen anti-Joodse kruistocht heeft moeten onderbreken, na het plotselinge verscheiden van haar beroemde eega en kruiwagen. In een commentaar op de publieke steun voor haar activiteiten stak Gretta de draak met de “zes miljoen” Joodse slachtoffers van Hitlers Arische bewind en bij andere gelegenheden deed zij met hysterische beschuldigingen een beroep, niet onsuccesvol, op de latente antisemitische onderbuikgevoelens des volkes.

En Dolle Dries, zoals Van Agt in politiek Den Haag ook wel werd genoemd, typeerde zichzelf en plein publique als “Ariër”, toen hij in 1972 voorstelde de ‘Drie van Breda’ in vrijheid te stellen. Voor de goede orde: het ging om Ferdinand aus der Fünten, Franz Fischer en Joseph Kotälla. De eerste twee waren coördinatoren van de genocide op het Nederlandse Jodendom en Kotälla verwierf een vreeswekkende reputatie als beul in het concentratiekamp Amersfoort. Vier jaar later kwam Van Agt opnieuw in politieke moeilijkheden, vanwege de raadselachtige ontsnapping van de Nederlandse oorlogsmisdadiger Pieter Menten, een dag voordat die zou worden gearresteerd.
Nadat Van Agt zich in 2002 met veel publiciteit had aangesloten bij de anti-Israelische actiegroep van Gretta Duisenberg, typeerde mijn collega Ronny Naftaniel de oud-premier als “een verwarde geest”.. Hoewel onbedoeld, was dat feitelijk een apologie: verwarde geesten kan men bij door hen begane morele ontsporingen immers minder verwijten maken dan scherpe, bewust handelende personen. Maar sommige publieke figuren lijken over een tefallaag te beschikken: hun onrechtvaardigheden en dubbelhartigheden worden vergeten of niet aangerekend, ze glijden van hen af.
En vervolgens verwerven zij eer en glorie met zelfingenomen uitingen van morele superioriteit, met verheven standpunten over rechtvaardigheid en vrede, met aanklachten tegen anderen, tegen Joden, tegen Israel, tegen Israels bondgenoot de VS. Naast Dries van Agt schaarden o.a. morele gidsen Marcel van Dam, Freek de Jonge en Paul Rosenmöller zich indertijd achter Gretta’s gedachtegoed. Van Dam oogstte roem met het in diskrediet brengen en daarmee failleren van een bonafide frisdrankfabrikant (de Exota-affaire); cabarettier De Jonge werd nationaal onsterfelijk door banaliteit tot artistieke norm te verheffen en Rosenmöller bouwde zijn politieke en journalistieke (IKON) carrière op de verering en promotie van massamoordenaars Pol Pot en Josef Stalin.

Wat beweegt deze lieden toch om zich zo obsessief voor de “Palestijnse zaak” in te zetten? Zouden zij net zo solidair zijn met de Palestijnse Arabieren als die niet in een conflict met een Joodse tegenstander verwikkeld waren? Het voorspelbare antwoord is te illustreren met de totale desinteresse van Van Agt c.s. voor het lot van de Palestijnse Arabieren in Libanon en Syrië (die al sinds 1948 in ellendige condities worden gehospitaliseerd om als politiek wapen tegen Israel te dienen), en met hun ijzingwekkende zwijgen toen Koeweit en Saoedi-Arabië na de Golfoorlog van 1991 zonder enige scrupules honderdduizenden ingeburgerde Palestijnse Arabieren uitwezen.
Nergens in het Midden-Oosten en Noord-Afrika zijn Van Agt c.s. ooit op een humanitaire of een politiek-activistische missie gesignaleerd. Van Agts pathetische J’accuse (letterlijk: ”Ik klaag aan”, de door hem van Emile Zola gepikte titel van zijn recente anti-Israelische tirade in de Volkskrant) treft niet de Saoedische apartheidsstaat of een van de andere islamitische dictaturen, maar het enige land in de regio waar Dries en Gretta hun brutaliteiten kunnen spuien zonder angst te hoeven hebben daarvoor te worden aan- of opgepakt. Het gaat onze morele gidsen blijkbaar niet om de omstandigheden van de (Palestijnse) Arabieren, maar om het problematische feit dat er een Joodse entiteit bestaat. Dat is antisemitisme.

Ontjoodsing
Ik heb vaker betoogd dat antizionisme niet zomaar een verschijningsvorm van antisemitisme is, maar de oudste en bovendien de meest doeltreffende. In de visie van antisemieten leidt het verdrijven van de Joden uit het Land van Israel onvermijdelijk tot de gewenste vervreemding en ontjoodsing. Voor de vernietiging van het Jodendom – het ultieme doel van het antisemitisme – is het van essentieel belang de geografische basis van de Joodse identiteit weg te nemen, Jeruzalem en het Heilige Land te ontjoodsen.
Het is daar waar antisemitisme en antizionisme als identieke tweelingen uitwisselbaar zijn. Het is daar waar anti-Israelische acties kunnen worden getoetst, kunnen worden gecategoriseerd als legitiem (de met enorme dilemma’s kampende staat Israel handelt regelmatig onrechtmatig en kan/moet daarop worden aangesproken) of als misdadig (gericht op de ondermijning en/of ontmanteling van de Joodse staat). Dat laatste wordt bijvoorbeeld zichtbaar als politieke acties de demografische verhoudingen dusdanig beogen te veranderen dat Israel ophoudt een Joodse staat te zijn.

Het eerder genoemde in ellende hospitaliseren van de (miljoenen nakomelingen van de) Palestijns-Arabische vluchtelingen, slachtoffers van de door de Arabische staten begonnen anti-Israelische vernietigingsoorlog van 1948, is de eerste component. De tweede bestaat uit het “schreeuwen om rechtvaardigheid” voor die mensen, in de vorm van hun “terugkeer” naar hun oude woongebieden. Volgens Gretta en Dries is dat een recht, volgens mij is dat een garantie voor voortduring van het conflict. Maar daar is het onze morele gidsen blijkbaar juist om te doen.
De kruistocht van Van Agt is geen privé-aangelegenheid, maar wordt georganiseerd en gefinancierd door United Civilians for Peace, een al jaren actief antizionistisch samenwerkingsverband van de medefinancieringsorganisaties voor ontwikkelingshulp NOVIB (algemeen), ICCO (protestants-christelijk) en CORDAID (katholiek), de ‘vredesbewegingen’ IKV (protestants-christelijk) en Pax Christi (katholiek), en de PKN-organisatie KerkinActie. De voortdurende betrokkenheid van christelijke organisaties bij op destructie van de Joodse staat gerichte kruistochten zou toch zo langzamerhand iets meer stampij moeten veroorzaken dan het optrekken van de wenkbrauwen bij maar een klein groepje kerkgangers. Collaborateurs
De tactiek van het antizionistische kamp is steevast te beweren dat men helemaal niet antisemitisch is, maar voor vrede en samenwerking (waarbij de andere partij bij associatie dus tegen vrede en samenwerking is). Dat wordt “bewezen” door aan boord nemen van Joodse individuen of organisaties. Toen Van Agt c.s. op 22 augustus hun kruistocht begonnen, bevond Hajo Meijer van “Een Ander Joods Geluid” zich prominent in hun gevolg. Meijer wordt volgens velen door Joodse zelfhaat gedreven en hij koketteert op ongehoorde wijze met zijn Auschwitz-ervaring, die hij misbruikt als legitimatie om voortdurend tegen het Jodendom en Israel aan te schoppen. Een andere Joodse bondgenoot van de kruisvaarders is ‘vredesactivist’ Uri Avnery, vele tientallen jaren – ook tijdens de meest recente door Arafat begonnen terreuroorlog - een dierbare vriend van de PLO-leider. In Nederland hadden wij Mussert.
Ook op organisatorisch niveau worden Joodse collaborateurs aangehaakt, zoals het Israelische ‘Comité tegen de Vernietiging van Huizen’, dat overigens niet van zich heeft laten horen naar aanleiding van de recente deportatie van ruim negenduizend Joden uit de Gazastrook en Noord-Samaria en de verwoesting van hun dorpen. De catastrofale gevolgen van die ‘ontruiming’ zijn in de vorige editie door mij genoemd. Zij zullen de moderne kruisvaarders sterken in hun overtuiging dat een nieuwe bevrijding van Jeruzalem en het Heilige Land voor de deur staat.
